Helen McAllister, a local folk artist, moved to Tehachapi in 1990 when she retired from a career in behavior management. As soon as she arrived, she became interested in the history of the area and began painting familiar places around town. Helen is now relocating to San Pedro to live with her daughter. She can't take 30 years of paintings and collections to her new home, so she has been donating items to local thrift shops and museums. Many of her paintings have already been given away during...
In 1977, a Tehachapi kid kicked a 45-yard field goal against Kern Valley and established a record that would stand for 47 years. Vince McLaughlin booted that field goal in a 27-10 loss at Kern Valley in a season that was less than memorable for the Warriors, who would finish the year 4-5 and suffer their first losing record since 1961. I'm fairly confident that Vince and his head coach at the time, Dennis Ruggles, paid very little attention to that record. Back then they might not have even know...

He served as a full-time pastor in the South Carolina Conference for 32 years before transferring to the California-Nevada Conference in June 2016. He married his wife CeCe, on June 15, 2016, and on the next day, they loaded a U-Haul with all of their belongings, and drove to San Leandro, California. He served two years at Downs Memorial UMC in Berkley and six...
Nestled in the heart of Old Town Tehachapi at 20418 Brian Way, The Healthy Hippie Trading Co., affectionately known as "The Hippie," has been a vibrant hub for free spirits, fashion lovers and those seeking a deeper connection with themselves. Founded three years ago by Sarah Rose, the boutique was born out of a desire to bring back the fun and funky vibes of the '60s and '70s, offering a variety of retro-inspired clothing and plant-based snacks. "I wanted to create a space that felt like a...

Cutting the ribbon was artist Lyn Bennett who did most of the re-creation. Bennett is joined by Gale Caldwell of Gallery 'N' Gifts, JR Long who did all the...
I came to Tehachapi to learn to fly at our famous Skylark North Glider Flight School. At the time, I always used Willow Springs Road, the back road up to Tehachapi. Well, I got pulled over by a Kern County Sheriff one day. I was going a bit over the speed limit as I went by some sod field farms a few miles past Willow Springs Raceway, and that candy store that was on the Rosamond Blvd. intersection. The Kern County Sheriff got my driver's license, registration, insurance information and when he...
As the summer winds down, the bounty of fresh herbs in our garden begins to dwindle, but there's still time to make the most of your remaining basil with a delightful non-dairy pesto that's both versatile and delicious. This recipe swaps out the traditional pine nuts for pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, giving the pesto a unique and slightly nutty flavor that pairs beautifully with the vibrant notes of basil. Pesto has its origins in Genoa, a city in northern Italy. The classic version,...

As I mentioned in a previous article, there will be three seats up for election on Nov. 5. Incumbents, Diane Barney, Robert Morgan and Chuck Coleman are all running again, plus four other candidates, including: Jim Crocoll, Andrew Parker, Jeremy Woods and myself. I detailed information about Diane Barney and Jim Crocoll in an earlier article and thought I would introduce you to some others who are running. I like to let people connect a face with a name. Many readers know some of the candidates...
The Internet is a wonderful source of facts (and, I admit, a fair amount of nonsense) and a great place for communication and inspiration. I especially love hearing from friends who share those precious little stories of inspiration, which I like to pass on to you. This is one of those stories (author unknown): "My dad has bees. Today I went to his house, and he showed me all of the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off of a five-gallon bucket full of honey, and on top of the...
Corey Torres, District Manager addresses recent concerns regarding the replacement of grass with decomposed granite (DG) at the Meadowbrook Dog Park and explains why returning to grass is not feasible. The Dog Park at Meadowbrook Park, which opened in 2016, almost immediately began to experience deterioration of its grass. The amount of daily foot traffic and activity in the park, specifically in the large dog area, made maintaining healthy grass impossible. A park of this size needs to be at...

Daydreaming and fishing are a perfect fit for many 8 year old boys. A diverse forest to explore is a nice addition. Measuring approximately 50,000 square miles, the Ozarks spread across four states and 93 counties. Plenty of room for one small boy without boundaries. It becomes apparent within the first few paragraphs in J Lee Bagan's novel "Billy Dee of the Ozarks," that this 8 year old deserves a set of loving and doting parents. But with a father in prison and a mother on drugs, he is...

Reiki Master Patti Gould, visiting from Tucson, is bringing her expertise in the Usui System of Natural Healing to our...
Despite the size of Tehachapi, one thing is for sure, Tehachapi is recognized in different parts of the world. Recently in Frankfurt, Germany, now in Boston, Massachusetts and a few weeks ago in my favorite island of Hawaii, Kauai. I started my career in a small kiosk in the now closed Golden State Mall. I sold accessories alongside a makeup artist and I also worked at Taco Bell. One Saturday morning, a bride had an appointment for makeup at 11 a.m., but she showed up flustered at 9:30 a.m....
As a computer tech here in Tehachapi, I deal with "Phishing" every day. Unfortunately, many of our residents are being scammed and pestered by this issue, so I thought it best to re-run this article. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this topic. So, there you were reading your email, catching up on work or reading about family and friends. Then you saw something that piqued your interest. Something that said it was a spreadsheet, or a receipt or something similar. You click to...

It is a chance to improve and enjoy one’s musical ability. Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra is beginning their 2...

It's said, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Our Tehachapi Community Theatre Association's (TCTA) photo montage invites you right inside the show to see the cast of "Deathtrap," the classic suspense thriller by Ira Levin. Here are just a few raves from opening weekend: "You've got yourselves a HIT." "Terrific!" "I screamed, I cried, I laughed." "It was a treat!" "Suspenseful!" "I didn't know what was going to happen next!" "Funny and terrifying!" "Another great play at the BeeKay!" "What a...
I first wrote about the theme of a You-OR-Me world verses a You-AND-Me world almost 20 years ago. But things have changed in recent years and not for the better. I think the theme is worth another go 'round today. Over the last few years, I've seen a You-OR-Me attitude grow within our country, an "US v THEM" attitude that divides us like never before, sometimes verbally, sometimes violently. Some people seem to be outright embracing and glorifying the ugly side of language and attitude and actio...
