Gibanica (pronounced Ghee-bah-nee-tsah) isn't just a dish, it is a connection to my childhood, filled with family, tradition and love. Growing up, it was always present at every holiday gathering, making it impossible to imagine any celebration without it. My grandmother, Baba, would layer phyllo dough with the creamy and cheesy filling then drizzle each sheet with melted butter. I'd watch as she carefully placed her cherished enamel baking dish in the oven with her delicate hands. That same...
Books are my friends and the characters within them hold precious memories. While some people use Advent Calendars to usher in December, I use picture books. I collect my old and new friends together with their holiday additions and let them usher me into the season. From Charlie Brown and Winnie the Pooh, to Madeleine and Dr. Seuss, Clifford the Big Red Dog and the very mischievous cookie mouse, I treasure our first meetings and our ongoing adventures. More recent additions like Llama Llama,...
Tehachapi is a place where people are kind, generous and reach out to those who may need help. The Salvation Army is one of the organizations that does a lot to make life in Tehachapi more enjoyable for people. Tehachapi Community Church appreciates these efforts because they have similar goals of caring and sharing with others. Laurie Betts encouraged members of TCC to support the effort of The Salvation Army to provide Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. The small congregation was able to raise $400 for this project. Laurie asked...

Have you noticed the light? Though our days are now shorter, there is a golden light that drapes over our mountains and valleys during late afternoons and makes individual leaves, single blades of grass, as well as dried out bushes and dead broken branches, glow with beauty. It is like the sun is emptying its goodness upon us. Autumn is truly a special time of year. A gift. As the nation turns to the celebration of Thanksgiving, holiday tables reflect that light with candles, gleaming silver...
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and may be here by the time you read this, signaling a time of reflection and gratitude for all the many blessings we have in our lives. That may seem a little more difficult this year, especially considering the big picture, what with the United States still being so divided and all of us facing a rather unchartered and uncertain future. Things will get better, as some folks say, or they'll get worse as others say, but the thing about life is (as most of us can...
Lots of people came out for Plane Crazy Saturday this month, even though it was colder and windy. It is so nice to see a number of aircraft on the ramp, including Dave Robbins Cessna 182. Dave works at Stratolaunch and pilots the chase plane, a Cessna Citation. We had a visitor from Germany, Joerg Schieber, who had sent an email to us in September asking if it would be possible to fly in a Cessna 150 while visiting Plane Crazy. We told him that we would try to find someone. He had earned his...
As someone who grew up watching professional boxing, and of course the likes of "Iron" Mike Tyson, I felt the need to weigh in on the events of Nov. 15, in which the former heavyweight champion came out of retirement at 58 years old to face a 27-year-old social media mogul and entrepreneur Jake Paul, who has fancied himself a fighter over the last several years. I'll start by giving both men a ton of credit, as annoying as Paul is to so many traditional fight fans, he is getting eyes back on...
"Charter Schools are targeting Kern County." Those were the first words Democrats heard from Greg Ardoin when he spoke at the November meeting of Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club. Ardoin is one of the co-founders of the Kern County Board of Education Improvement Coalition. He is passionate about ensuring that schools are safe, public and accountable. Ardoin went on to explain there are two types of charter schools. The dependent charters, like Valley Oaks in Tehachapi, are authorized by a...
Dress A Girl is a project started many years ago at Mountain Bible Church by Debbie Schmidt that sews little girl dresses. The finished dresses are sent out to different organizations around the world and then distributed to less fortunate little girls. I was able to distribute the dresses myself during my 2024 visit to the Phillipines. The smile on the faces shows their gratitude and I was able to share the love of Jesus Christ. I'd like to welcome two new seamstresses, Rupali and Gracy...

As part of our continued examination of the wellness wheel and practices that support balance as a key to well-being, we will be exploring Occupational Wellness, one of the eight dimensions that contribute to overall health and wellness as noted in "Dimensions of Wellness" on Northern Kentucky University's website. "This dimension recognizes the importance of finding satisfaction, enrichment, and a sense of purpose through work," according to Northern Kentucky University. The occupational...
Our thoughts and emotions are responsible for 95% of our health problems. This means only 5% of our health issues come from things like toxins or physical problems. Think about the last time you got angry or upset-did you feel it somewhere in your body? Maybe your stomach felt sick, or your neck got tight. Paying attention to how your body reacts during stressful times is important. That's how stress can turn into physical problems in our bodies. The foundation gateway of the spinal flow...
This is a great question and one I hear often. Families usually want to come in right away and prepare. My first response is stay home with your loved one. Time with your loved one is your most precious commodity. I have had instances where families were at the funeral home preparing and their loved one passed away while they were with me. This can be devastating. We can help you begin this difficult process at home and aid you in preparing for a meeting with an arrangement counselor after your...

As Thanksgiving approaches, preparations are in full swing! The menus are planned, shopping lists are scribbled on little pieces of paper and invitations have been sent to gather family and friends for a day of cooking, feasting and gratitude. The classics will, of course, make their annual appearance: the turkey as the centerpiece, green bean casserole, stuffing, pumpkin and pecan pies, and, let's not forget...the cranberry sauce! Ah, cranberry sauce! My relationship with this holiday staple...
On Monday, Nov.11 at 11 a.m., a crowd gathered at the Bear Valley Springs Veterans Memorial site at Cub Lake to commemorate the veterans who lost their lives in service to their nation. The event opened with a welcome introduction by the current BVSVA Commander, Lee Tharp. After the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the “National Anthem,” the invocation was given by Bill Kritlow, immediate past commander and chaplain. Then Martin Hernandez introduced the speaker, Ildefonso Colon, AKA Poncho. He retired as First Sergeant in the USMC and is a Purple...

Sergio and Charisma Villanueva moved to Tehachapi in September from Antelope Acres near Palmdale where they had lived for the last six years. With them are their three children Monica, Titus and Silas. The three will soon be joined by Matthias when he enters the world. The couple have friends in Tehachapi and were attracted by the beauty and culture of the community here as well as its small town feel. Sergio was born in Guatamala but raised along with his brother in Los Angeles. He currently...

The Tehachapi Cancer Foundation couldn’t do what we do without your help and support. This village has been amazing supporting us for 10 years. We are currently assisting three families here in the greater Tehachapi area. Our clients range from 7 years old to 60+ years old. Each individual has unique needs and wants. Needs range from assisting with utilities to gas for their vehicle. Treatment is a minimum of 45 miles one way. Madera Children’s hospital is 160 miles one way. This is a big expense on a family. Taking time away from work, foo...
Our two hometown supermarkets, Albertsons and Save Mart, are really generous to our community in supporting good-deed efforts. This is the 14th year we have experienced this support from them! My church, Tehachapi Community Church, has been collecting from our congregation to provide Thanksgiving dinners to The Salvation Army for distribution to less fortunate families. When called on, Save Mart and, especially, Albertsons came through in a big way. We in Tehachapi are fortunate to have many hometown businesses which have been so helpful over...
