All of us at Have a Heart Humane Society would like to wish all of you and your pets the happiest and healthiest of holidays. We have had an incredible year, lots of ups and only a few downs. We haven't set any adoption records, but we have found some wonderful new homes for over 200 pets. We took several dozen cats and dogs from nice folks who found them here in Tehachapi and couldn't keep them, rescued seven dogs at one time (the mom and her 10-month-old pups) from an equipment yard on South S...
There is more than meets the eye to a well-behaved service dog sitting quietly at an airport ticket counter. Pre-travel preparations – from booking the flight to boarding it – are carefully orchestrated. Because travel days can be hectic and unpredictable, taking preemptive measures to address potential issues that may arise is very important. Few places offer more advanced challenges than an airport for public access training with service dogs. So much of what Betty encountered today was bra...

Marley's Mutts was founded to give shelter dogs a chance, not only to survive but also to thrive...

In the meantime, our dog rehabilitation...

When it comes to service dog etiquette, I need to give a shoutout to the kids! The girl pictured here is eight year-old Abby; she represents an impressive consciousness many children seem to possess with regard to manners around dogs in public, where many adults seem to be lacking. I took this picture during an outdoor lunch meeting in Sebastopol, CA a couple of weeks ago, after Abby approached me, and with a very mature and respectful tone, asked if it would be okay for her to pet Betty. She...

I received the following message recently, and wanted to share it as a way of presenting a growing problem that is infiltrating communities across the country. While I truly respect this person for "asking before doing", the thoughts expressed here represent a mindset that is significantly detrimental to individuals with disabilities, and the service dogs that help them live fuller lives. Dear Liz, I have a black lab who's pretty much all I've got and I would like to keep him with me as much as...
Because dogs and humans are both highly social animals, social learning theory applies to both species respectively. There is also research into the theory that social learning in domestic dogs has been heavily influenced by dogs' co-evolution with humans. In other words, dogs learn from their own canine social groups as well as from their human group or "pack" members. Social learning can reduce the costs (e.g. time, effort, risk) involved in the acquisition of resources or new skills....
I’m Kate Lueder the lost/found phone line person for The Tehachapi Humane Society (THS). In the last couple of months a fellow THS member, Cathy Springer, has introduced me to a great new way to get the word out in the local area for lost and found pets. It’s Facebook! I myself don’t use Facebook but Cathy does and has given me instruction in how to pass on this great new way to advertise your lost/found pet. First go on your Facebook page. Then go to the following sites to post your pet: Tehachapi Pet, Tehachapi Pet Network, Tehachapi Class...

When one thinks of a dog's life, one typically envisions a mutt stretched out in a sunny spot on the living room floor taking an afternoon nap; a happy-go-lucky puppy with her tongue hanging out as she enjoys the wind in her face on a car ride; a bounding buddy happily chasing a ball. These simple things indeed represent the joy of a dog's day-to-day existence, and they are sublime. That being said, balance is key in everyone's life - human and dog alike. Imagine a life with all work and no...

I can't tell you how many nights I spend here at the ranch sitting on the front deck and just stargazing. I am totally in awe of this world we live in. It makes me wonder what it was like before creation: When it was a blank canvas. Dark, I bet. And suddenly there was light. Every great painting and every great artist comes from that creation. Without it, nothing exists. I see the miracle of creation everyday here at the ranch. You only need to look at the animals to realize just how uniquely...
The Canine Creek staff spends countless hours each week taking lost/found pet reports, checking for microchips, searching for foster families for strays, taking phone calls and photos, and corresponding with Facebook fans of the Tehachapi Pet Network (TPN) page. Morning, noon and night, holidays, 7 days a week–the work just never ends trying to get local strays back home. They do it because we care about Tehachapi, but providing this community service is time consuming and costly. They began to wonder why don't people put tags on their pets? Be...
