You know how when you're on a long, intense hike up a steep incline, and your focus is solely on reaching the summit – then, when you finally get there, you have a breathtaking vantage point from which you can see all that culminated to inspire this moment of heightened gratitude? Well, that's how I felt on Thursday night during our 6th session of Marley's "Miracle Mutts" Life Skills class at the Mission at Kern County. As I watched the women handle the dogs they've been paired with – much mor...
On May 12 the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) hosted a "bear aware" public meeting at the BeeKay Theater in Tehachapi. The presentation on how to cohabitate with our native California black bears was very informative. We were treated to nearly a full hour of slides and insights as to black bear behavior by CDFW biologist Vicky Monroe. Ms. Monroe is known for her research into the native California black bear and its relationship with humans. She informed the audience of how...

A question...
I walk the ranch every morning and every night just to check and make sure all is well with the critters. It is a peaceful time and I enjoy the quiet time to visit with my friends in the animals. This morning baby rabbits were scampering everywhere and it reminded me that it is that time of the year: The time when little ones are everywhere and I start getting phone calls. At Windswept Ranch, this time of year, we get calls about fawns from all over the Tehachapi area. I think that just shows how much Tehachapi residents care about their deer,...

The warmth that comes with spring brigns increased sightings of Rattlesnakes in Kern County. "Although snakes generally come out when it is 78-82 degrees to hunt and mate, I am already seeing snakes out as temperatures are reaching 66 degrees," snake hunter Elliot Grimshaw said. Sightings of road-kill snakes have been reported to Grimshaw in California City and rancher Dory Kline, of Kline's Harem Arabians found a 3-½ foot, 10-rattled rattlesnake under his house just before Easter. "I...
It is one of the most common questions we get here at the ranch. The answer varies with the critter, so I thought I would share a few stories with you all. I didn't start off with a lot of animals. I started with a couple of horses from a local humane society. I had always wanted a horse ever since I was a little girl, so this was a dream come true. When I moved to a larger property, I added a couple more horses. Then someone told me about a llama that needed a home. Then a pig. Then a couple of...
With the annual Brite Lake Fishing Derby scheduled for April 18, the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District sought out the restocking of Brite Lake with fish that make fishing exciting. Although the Fish and Game Department is restocking the lake, as it does each year, there are additional Rainbow Trout being added to the lake, especially for this year’s Derby. “We checked with the Rec. Department up at Lake Isabella and they were stocking their lake with ‘Nebraska Tailwalkers’, so we contacted a fish hatchery in Nebraska and now we...
Imagine the unique challenge hospice workers face of enriching quality of life for those whose lives are tangibly nearing their end. Next, imagine an animal rescue whose goals include not just saving dogs' lives, but empowering them to thrive as contributing members of society. Now, imagine a creative partnership between two innovative organizations, joining forces to fulfill and evolve their respective missions. From within this vision, a very special dog will be trained as a therapy dog for...
Have a Heart Humane Society is proud to announce that two of our dogs have graduated from training classes at Thunder Paws Dog Training. Rudy is one of the “Magnificent 7” dogs, they were dumped in an equipment yard on South St. early in the spring 2014. Rudy, his mom, brother and four sisters, were rescued by Have a Heart volunteers and several local pet lovers who responded to a Facebook post about the dogs. Rudy’s foster mom, Chelley Kitzmiller, enrolled Rudy in Thunder Paws agility classes along with his brother Zeke. Both dogs showe...
We’ve all seen the darling images, which depict the more rural lifestyle. The cute little salt and pepper shakers with the proverbial black and white cow smiling up at you, the decorative yard flag with the happy cows, the adorable “love you till the cows come home” plaque and even the occasion tasteless pitcher in the form of an utter. I can recall the sweet little cow on the milk carton at the supermarket. We also have the functional cow crossing signs that line our roadways heading out to St...
I have been getting a lot of calls to see when the ranch will open, and there are days I wonder if it will happen. It's not that I don't love sharing, it's just that there is a lot of work involved and the people who loyally donate their time to help out are really being stretched to the max. When you open a place to the public, few people recognize the effort that goes into it. I am not just talking about cleaning pens – that happens on a daily basis and is handled by staffers – I am tal...
Not many things are more frustrating than finding your favorite pair of shoes or expensive headphones shredded to a pulp. But it's important to face the issue calmly and objectively, which you can do by remembering a couple of things. If your dog is still a puppy – especially one in between the ages of four and six months – this is totally normal, and it will pass. If your dog is older and still chewing out of control, chances are the behavior wasn't dealt with properly early on and will be mor...

The spay & neuter surgeries will be performed at Dr. Billingsley's clinic in Sand Canyon, Tehachapi. The pets will be given a pain medication injection and remain overnight. They will need to be picked up the next morning at 8:30 a.m. A rabies vaccination,...
helley Kitzmiller, a 30 year resident of Tehachapi, has two loves: writing and rescuing pets. She began writing romance novels in the late 1970's, when there were no writing classes or conferences to help aspiring romance writers. Eager to learn, Kitzmiller used a highlighter pen to deconstruct her favorite books-a tool she still recommends to new writers. After a few years of studying and practicing, she sold her first book and made it her goal to give readers a painless history lesson within...
Have a Heart Humane Society has been approached by a Tehachapi Eagle Scout to work with him and his troop on a community service construction project. We have given the idea a lot of consideration. Have a Heart proposes to work with the scouts to help some of the feral cat colonies in Tehachapi. Why does Tehachapi have feral cats? Feral cats are the offspring of stray or abandoned pets that were not spayed or neutered. Have a Heart will ask business owners, residents and our own volunteers to...
Ruth W. writes: “I have a 3 year-old shepherd mix that barks at everything. How can I train her not to bark?” Dear Ruth, So, you know how, when referring to extra-marital affairs people will say things like “the affair isn’t the problem, it is a ‘symptom’ of the problem”? Well, I believe this to be true where affairs are concerned, and also where “barking at everything” is concerned. It is first important to think about the different reasons WHY dogs bark. They obviously bark to communicate an...

ackie Cameron ran the Marley's Mutts spay and neuter program. She was so overwhelmed by its success, that she wrote the following as a thank you to participants and volunteers Tears fill my eyes as I write this; I feel that words will never be able to fully express what I am about to attempt. While attending the monthly animal control meeting I was presented with a set of numbers. These numbers broke me down; they hit me like a bus on the street. They were the intake numbers for all dogs in our...

The price is the same: $20 cats, $25 dogs (any size) The price includes spay or neuter; Rabies for pets 4 months old or older; and micro...

I'm a service dog trainer in the habit of naming pups-in-training after people whose hearts have helped shape mine. The first was Fred, after Mr. Rogers; the current one is Betty, in honor of the inestimable Betty White. The day I picked up this precious two month-old lab with the eyes of a sage and a sweetness just as deep, I determined I would find a way for us to meet Betty's namesake. On December 19th, 2014 – via too many synchronous cosmic forces to count or effectively sort out – my dre...
