  • Tips for Adopting a Pet

    Chelley Kitzmiller, Have a Heart Humane Society|Aug 2, 2014

Thinking about adopting a dog or a cat? Have a Heart Humane Society would like to pass on some information that we hope will be helpful. Should you buy from a breeder or a pet store, adopt from a shelter or from a pet rescue? If you buy a pet from a dog breeder, make sure you have thoroughly checked out the breeder first, not just online but by visiting their facility, and make sure you see all of the facility. Many breeders are not breeding to improve the breed, but are, in fact, backyard breed...

  • Stopping Separation Anxiety

Lisa Porter, Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Jul 19, 2014

Separation anxiety is hard to treat because it happens when you are gone. But there are a few tried and true methods that will eliminate most separation anxiety and get you on the right track. First is to kennel train your dog. The reason is not to keep your dog kenneled 24/7 but to stop her flight/fight behavior (pacing, barking, hiding, avoiding, etc.) when you are gone. The kennel should be big enough so that your dog is able to lay down easily, but not so big that they can walk around in it....

  • Low Cost Mobile Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Clinic

    Jul 19, 2014

On Saturday, August 9, Have a Heart Humane Society is delighted to once again bring another low cost mobile spay/neuter vaccination clinic to Tehachapi. Unlike previous clinics, this one (our 8th!) will be open to all greater Tehachapi residents with no income requirements. This clinic is being funded by grants from our own Union Bank, the Ethel and Harry West Foundation, and by a private donation from the Turners. As the latter prefers to remain anonymous, we won't say which Turners. Our vet,...

  • Emotion, in Motion

    Liz R Kover|Jul 5, 2014

A great healing revolution is underway in the universe. Healing energy is available to every single one of us in abundance. All we must do to utilize its power is understand that it is there, and choose to tap into it. There are mediums through which healing can be expedited, and catapult us to worlds more empowering and beautiful than any we’ve known. Specifically, I am referring here to the bond between Humans and Dogs. When connected by the common goal of health and balance, both can reach o...

  • Have A Heart Humane Society Needs Community's Help

    Chelley Kitzmiller, President & Founder of Haveahearthumanesociety.org|Jul 5, 2014

We are asking for help for the dogs and cats at the Mojave Shelter. The shelter is in dire need of blankets, towels, rugs, pet beds, dog and cat treats and chews. Avoid blankets with stuffing, feathers and fringe and rugs with rubber backing or fringe. Please wash and bag items before donating. And please don’t forget this shelter when you’re thinking about adding a new pet to your family. Weeks ago we reported rescuing seven small dogs from an equipment yard on South Street. We dubbed them the...

  • Sometimes You Need an Excuse...

    Diana Frieling|Jul 5, 2014

...to celebrate! We have so many holidays on our calendar. There is actually a World Camel Day! It happens on the longest day of the year: June 22 when the heat is in full swing. We just passed the Fourth of July. It celebrates our independence, and while much of that independence has eroded, it gives us a chance to at least think about it. The calendar is full of celebration days; Peace Day, Labor Day, Grandparents Day, Groundhog Day. You get it. Lots of celebration days. We are lucky to have...

  • Shedding the Weight

Liz R Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director at Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Jun 21, 2014

With the obesity crisis weighing down both human and canine populations, research into how to tackle the problem is emerging from scientists in varying disciplines. Currently, the American Kennel Club's Canine Health Foundation is funding a study called The Reciprocal Impact of a Healthy and Active Lifestyle on the Physical and Mental Well-Being of Dogs and Their Owners: Physical Activity and Walking (PAW). The study's abstract reads: While it is well established that an active lifestyle and...

  • Flight of the Canines

    Kathryn Jacobson|Jun 7, 2014

On Friday May 23 my friend Molly Mackin and I went to the Bakersfield City shelter on Mt. Vernon Ave. We decided to be brave and go photograph some dogs and try to get them homes before their demise dates. Rather than turn us away, the head of the city shelter Julie Johnson welcomed us; despite the fact that she was dealing with the furor over the dog that bit the boy and was chased by the cat! People were calling from all over the country to save that dog and she was busy telling the news...

  • From California to North Carolina, Pet Nanny Goes Coast to Coast

    Daphne Sherring, The Pet Nanny|May 24, 2014

Greetings my fellow pet lovers. I'm Daphne Sherring, The Pet Nanny. I am writing to you today with great difficulty, as I share the bittersweet news that we are moving to North Carolina. Many of you and your fur babies have touched my heart and graciously blessed my life in countless ways. I have had the immense pleasure of sharing my love of pet sitting with you, and – hopefully – brought a hearty laugh, sweet smile or a precious tear to your eyes as I've shared fellow friends and nei...

  • Daycare Stories

Liz R Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director at Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|May 10, 2014

My supposed-to-be-ticking motherly stopwatch seems to have cool jets for a woman of 30. I suppose my biological instincts to coddle and coo are aptly fulfilled through my job: I work at a daycare center, and once you read the following list of "notable events" from my day today (and typical of most every work day), maybe you'll understand why I have decided I don't necessarily need kids of my own. Dudley was running to catch a ball I threw to him and tripped over his own goofy feet, landing in...

  • The Cat House

    Shirley Given|Apr 26, 2014

Many Tehachapi residents have been to The Cat House or Feline Conservation Center, in Rosamond but newcomers may not have heard about it and there may be those long-time residents who have not heard about it, also. Guess the point here is it is such a wonderful place, it seemed a reminder of its proximity to Tehachapi might be timely. The Exotic Feline Breeding Compound/Feline Conversation Center, located on Hwy 14, will be hereon in referred to as the EFBC/FFC or compound. Acronyms can be...

  • The New F.A.D. in Service Dog Training

    Liz R Kover, Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Apr 26, 2014

Envision this. Bill, an American male in his early 40s, has struggled with weight issues all his life. Bill is depressed and uses junk food as an emotional anesthetic. He gets up in the morning feeling dread, and comes home from work each night with fast food to the empty calories of Reality TV. Bill is crippled by a lack of motivation to do better for himself. His negative, sedentary lifestyle has become a disability with which he needs serious help. Now, imagine this. Bill has decided to stop...

  • Gift of Presence

    Liz R Kover, Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Apr 12, 2014

A fellow animal rescuer and friend of mine asked a poignant and thought-provoking question. His text message read, "At the end of the day with all you do and all you see and the stories you hear, how do you sleep at night?" The short answer is that after all we do and all we see and the stories we hear in a day's work with Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, we are utterly exhausted. The longer answer explains how I believe it is that we are able to go to bed exhausted, but not defeated. How we are able...

  • A Furry Love Affair

    Daphne Sherring, The Pet Nanny|Apr 12, 2014

Greetings my fellow pet lovers. I'm the Pet Nanny and I am so delighted to share a unique story of Buddy, the Bichon-Poo, and his best friend Molly, a tiger and white striped kitty. Buddy's tale begins at a busy intersection in Valencia, Calif. He was darting frantically in and out of traffic. Suddenly, a pet rescue worker happened to be driving by and spotted him. Buddy was horribly matted, covered in dirt and only weighed nine lbs. His weight should have been 18 lbs. Incidentally, that very...

  • Dr. Grossman

Zach Skow, Executive Director, Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Mar 29, 2014

I just finished a five-mile run during which, by some sweet stroke of serendipity my iPod went dead, leaving me undistracted to ponder the life and influence of Dr. A Richard Grossman. While he was not generally a practicing veterinarian, rather a doctor for humans, Dr. Grossman handled one of the worst dog injury cases Marley's Mutts has ever seen. Not only did he save the lives of two special puppies; he greatly influenced my life as well, and I am a better man for having known him. Phoenix...

Have a Heart Humane Society would like to thank Adam Wojack and everyone else at Union Bank of Tehachapi for awarding our organization a generous grant. The money will be used to provide more spay and neuter surgeries for pets owned by local residents. Each clinic has spayed or neutered 35 to 39 cats and...

  • A Tale of Two Kitties

    Daphne Sherring, The Pet Nanny|Mar 29, 2014

Meowy greetings! I'm The Pet Nanny, and it's my pleasure to share the story of two of my kitty clients - Moe and Bowie. I remember the day I met them. I lightly knocked on the door, and I was met by their fur mom. I would also like to mention a very special family member Dixie, a gorgeous Bloodhound, who greeted me nose to chest at the front door. I glanced across the room to see two long haired black kitties. Moe, the male (and older of the two), came cautiously out to see who I was, then...

  • Loving Fred: Reflections of a Service Dog Trainer

Liz R. Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director at Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Mar 15, 2014

My job over the last year has been to train a Labrador puppy as a service dog for a child with autism. Having graduated with an A.S. in Assistance Dog Education from Bergin University of Canine Studies last spring, I was thrilled to be hired as a trainer right out of the gate by a wonderful organization called Good Dog Autism Companions. GDAC, a small non-profit based in San Diego, is run by a couple whose thirteen year old son has autism, and whose lives were transformed by a service dog named...
