The story of Nulo is really the story of Michael and Max. While working in the corporate world and living in California, Michael was preparing for an upcoming work trip and was searching for someone to watch his black lab, Max, while he would be gone. With no luck finding an adequate dog-care situation and refusing to leave his buddy behind, he decided to drive to Colorado instead of fly so that Max could join. While in the car, Michael had plenty of time to think about the lack of quality pet c...
Have you ever wondered if your cat is drinking enough water? Cats very rarely go in search of their water bowls. This is because they are considered desert animals and tend to get much of their necessary fluids from the food that they eat. Even with the best of kibble, cats can become dehydrated because there just isn't a lot moisture in dry food. A cat that doesn't get the moisture they need can end up with health problems down the road: dehydration, urinary stones and even kidney stones....
“My dog itches all the time. What can I do?” We hear that question quite often at Canine Creek. It is true, there are times it could be environmental. It can be dry and dusty here in Tehachapi. We have weeds from the spring which are dying out and can become itchy and scratchy on your pet’s feet and coat. But, did you know it could be the food you are feeding them? Let me tell you about my Labrador, Kleo. When we brought Kleo home we were living in Orange County. I knew nothing about a dog’s need for good nutrition. My thoughts were, if they...
We didn't want a dog. So when Ben came home from his 6 a.m. run in Griffith Park on a foggy, Monday morning with a dog, we hoped to find its owners. When Ben came into the bedroom and showed me this dog, who was standing on the patio outside our bedroom, I said to him, "That is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen - what kind of dog is that?" I was uttering the exact words that hundreds of family, friends and complete strangers would utter for the next 12 years. That day, because the dog had...
With many people spending more time at home, many (myself included), have found themselves bringing a new pet into their lives. For me it was another kitten. It's always exciting bringing home a new furry friend, but if you have other pets, careful introductions can help to smooth the way toward harmonious merging of pets. I'll share a few tips on what I've learned from my readings and past experiences. First, it's good to start slow. You want to make everyone as comfortable as possible. Set...
This year, the Fourth of July will take on a different meaning for many. Some will celebrate the birth of a nation. Others will decry injustice and berate that nation. Here at the ranch we approach the Fourth with a bit of sadness and a sense of hope. It has been over a year since we have had guests at the ranch. We closed for the entire year in 2019 to do restoration and repairs and try to build a better place for you and the animals. It was the end of October 2018, that the ranch suffered a...
Sometimes things just don't work like you planned. I think with all that has happened this year, we all know that. When we decided to close the ranch for a year we had no clue this would happen. We just wanted to create a better ranch for the animals and a better experience for you. We worked really hard in 2019 to make that happen despite torrential rain, freezing snow, horrific winds and more recently, extreme heat. Heading up to April, everyone involved was so excited and proud of the work...
Though the weather continues to bounce back and forth between spring and winter temperatures, it's time to start gearing up for hot months. We all know we should put on sunscreen before time spent outdoors, dress for the weather and hydrate when temps soar. But what about your pup? There are many products available to keep them safe and comfortable in the summer sunshine, and Canine Creek has you covered. Our shoe-protected feet may never realize it, but on hot days concrete and cement walkways...
Rattlesnake aversion training will take place Sunday, May 17 and Monday, May 18 at Meadowbrook Park, 21750 Westwood Blvd. Cost is $75 per dog through Natural Solutions. To schedule an appointment call (661) 822-5226 or email [email protected]. Safety guidelines for COVID-19 will be followed....
Well, here we are a month into “lock- down.” I do not know about you, but I never thought I would experience something like this in my lifetime. I will tell you who must be enjoying this crazy time though... our pets! They are definitely reaping the benefits of “their” people being home more. Although, it is great for them now, some pups and even some kitties might experience some anxiety when the world opens back up again and we slowly get back into daily life. As much as we want to snuggle with our furry family all day long, some experts...
If you came by Rescued Treasures Resale Store toward the beginning of the COVID-19 quarantine, you probably noticed that our little resale shop had a few days where we closed, thinking we could do reduced hours and a staggered schedule. Then came mandated lockdown, so we are doing the “right thing.” We had to face it anyway. We as an organization are in the high risk group – with one exception, we are almost all senior citizens! Luckily, right before the lockdown, all our puppies and dogs got adopted into loving homes and almost all of the k...
Have a Heart Humane Society would like to thank Bank of the Sierra for a very generous grant of $3,000 funded to us on April 19, 2019. The monies we received help to fund our continuing spay and neuter efforts right here in Tehachapi. As more and more people find out about the low-cost spay and neuter clinics we offer, they fill up really fast. This just goes to show how desperately this service is needed in Tehachapi, Mojave, Rosamond and California City. Even with the world in turmoil right now, we are still getting calls and emails daily...
The COVID-19 crisis has caused us all to change our daily lifestyles. Many are working from home, students are home from school and we are all working together to stay isolated to stop the spread of this virus. You know who is really happy these days? Your pets! Suddenly, their snuggle partners are home more, walks are happening more frequently and there is always a warm body available for cuddles. But as shopping trips become less frequent, and possibly quite aggravating, we want you to know .....
Maybe it has been a long time since you adopted or rescued a new pet. In the time you had your prior dog, you have probably forgotten how scared he was and how long he took to settle into your home. You have also probably forgotten how panicky you felt, especially that first night thinking, "Oh no – what have I done? I'll get NO sleep tonight; he's going back tomorrow!" But luckily, you hung in there, you gave him time, patience and love, and before long the whole family loved him and he was you...
I cannot tell you how excited we all are to be opening the ranch to visitors again! We really have worked hard over the past year to get things ready and it looks like most of the work will be done thanks to some amazing volunteers. (We still have a place for you if you are interested in volunteering and will have an orientation on Saturday, March 14 and again on March 28). Having an extra day in February really helped. Leap Year was a gift for us. I am not sure what you did with your extra...
Did you know there are more choices for dog and cat food other than kibble? If you have ever tried to look up pet food on the internet, you will find it is almost overwhelming. That's what we are here for! To help assist you in finding the right food for your pet. Like, people, all dogs and cats are different. What might work well for one pet, may not give the same benefits to another pet. In this month's article, we are going to look at Raw Food for your pets. Yep, I said raw food! "What is...
As the second semester gets underway at the high school here in Tehachapi, members of the senior class who are going to seek higher education are looking for scholarship possibilities. There are many generous clubs and organizations in our community who put forth monetary gifts for students who have excelled in their academics and they are happy to see these students apply and compete for the funding. We at Have A Heart Humane Society offer two scholarships to graduating seniors. They are each worth $1,000, and require an essay and a minimum of...
It seems that there have been a lot of pets on the loose lately. At Have A Heart Humane Society's resale shop, Rescued Treasures, we have had an interesting phenomenon in recent weeks. Each day, there have been six to eight stray dogs brought into our shop by kind hearted people who have found dogs running in their neighborhoods, hit by cars near their houses or pets who have suddenly been thrust into circumstances where they have lost their owners due to death or loss of home. As a rescue, we...
Picking the right shampoo for your pet can be a tough decision, luckily, I've tried a few and found one I like better than all the others. It's called Plum Silky by Nature's Specialties. It's a wonderful, all natural shampoo, with a sweet fruity fragrance. It leaves pets of all kinds soft and fresh. This is a professional dog and cat groomer's "go to" for its ability to clean well, add texture, condition and the wonderful lasting fragrance it's been known for. The aloe vera, vitamins and silk pr...
I'm the kind of animal lover who would visit pet stores and boutiques, even when I didn't have a pet to shop for. It was like window shopping for my future furry family. The sights and sounds of squeaky toys held me over until the day I had fur babies of my own. When I lived in Orange County, I could walk to every store I needed from my apartment. I often took the longer route so I could walk through Petsmart and dream of wet noses and soft fur. It was still a couple years, after moving back to...
Most of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. Sometimes, the loved one comes in the form of our beloved family pet. This year alone, I have lost two of my four-legged family members. Even though I was blessed with having my pets in my life for more than an average amount of time (16 and 15 years), the sense of loss is no different. Grief can make you feel sad, lonely, anxious and some days, it's just downright paralyzing. At times, the loss of a pet can be so deep you vow, "I'm never...
Since the Tail Waggers Group was founded in Bear Valley Springs by Molly Mackin and others, they have reached out in many ways to help the community. One of the most interesting branches of Tail Waggers is the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, which is associated with a national organization. Therapy dogs are not the same as the well-known “service” dogs. Therapy dogs are owned by members of Tail Waggers and the national association and they pay visits to schools, senior rest homes and hospitals to brighten the lives of patients, residents, and sch...
Have a Heart Humane Society would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the Bear Valley Springs Tail Waggers Club for their recent donation drive. They collected food and cash donations for our little fur babies. In just a few hours they collected over $425, and piles of food. We thank you from the bottom of our wagging tails!...
provided by Canine Creek Pet Wash & Boutique Regular grooming is a very important part of your pet's overall health and well-being. Taking your pet to a good professional groomer at a young age will help your pet learn not to be fearful of being handled. As an owner, you can also help by petting and touching your pet from head to tail while talking calmly to it. Brushing your pet on a regular basis will help to keep the coat from matting, remove dead hair, dander and distribute the natural oils....
Oftentimes when we consider service dogs we think of emotional support animals or therapy dogs. The reality is a service dog is a serious lifestyle change and they aren't for everyone. While they are seen as family, they are also partners and essential in daily living for those with disabilities. Disabilities can range from physical to psychiatric, including disabilities that can't be seen with the naked eye. There are many types of working dogs with different laws and training that help and...
