This Veterans Day, I will be celebrating my favorite veteran, my fiancé Rick, with a recipe that brings back fond memories of his childhood. While blueberry pancakes are usually our go-to for special mornings, this year I decided to change it up with cinnamon streusel blueberry muffins. These muffins bring together the warmth of fresh blueberries and the comforting crumble of cinnamon streusel, and they are a perfect way to honor Rick's service and transport him back to a cherished childhood...
By luck, I ran into a pilot friend driving near Tehachapi Airport. In talking with him he asked me if I saw the P-51 at the airport. I said no. So, he was happy to take me out to the hangar where people from Vintage V-12 were working on the ship. Vintage V-12 is a locally based engine maker for the P-51 warbird power plant. This North American P-51A Mustang with registration number "N 51Z" is a special bird. It's made of parts from a "D" model and "A" version P-51 World War II fighter, bomber...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission. Autumn doesn't always bother to warn us when it comes to Tehachapi abruptly. Usually it kind of sneaks in, but some years, summer ends with a sudden chill. I've gone out to my curb in my usual shorts to pick up the paper and quickly discovered we had moved into long pants weather overnight. Having lived here a mere 23 years I don't fancy myself an expert on local climate, but I'll venture a guess that we'll have some...

Bread in some form or another has been around since the dawn of man. Archeologists have found millstones dating back 30,000 years, which suggest humans (most likely women) were making flatbread from the flour of ground cattails and ferns. Around 10,000 years ago wheat was domesticated and became the grain of choice for flatbread. Today, what we call a "traditional" flatbread is made with only wheat flour, salt and water. The resulting dough is rolled out into a circle then baked in a hot oven...

I understand that a lot of people have been dealing with a lot of mice over the last few months, and I have not been spared. As I settled in to write my column for the last issue of The Loop, I saw a little mouse run across the floor in my living room. It was not an isolated incident. Indeed, it had become a common one in what I was beginning to think of as my own personal mouse war. I've lost track of how many mice I've caught in traps so far (since sometime in July), and I know others have...
Ann Wurster moved to Tehachapi in July from Fresno where she was in retirement. Ann was born in San Diego and grew up in North San Diego County. She was raised a ranch kid and was always around horses. As a kid, her family used to come here. She thought of Tehachapi as horse country and had spent about six summers here. It was those memories of four seasons, mountains and horses that brought her here from Fresno. Following high school, Ann attended college at the University of California Davis...
Friends at Mojave Air & Space Port at Rutan Field were shocked and saddened on Oct. 20 to learn that their friend and fellow pilot, Chuck Coleman, was killed when his Extra 300 crashed during an aerobatic routine at the Las Cruses Air and Space Expo in New Mexico. "Speechless" was a word heard often when people tried to express their feelings about Chuck's crash. "He was such a good and experienced pilot." The Las Cruses Bulletin reported, "The city confirmed Coleman's death on Monday afternoon...
On any given day you can see about 60 to 80 trains within a 24-hour period passing through Tehachapi. Trains march up and down the 2.5% grade, some of which reach more than a mile in length, with oil tank cars, grain cars, gravel cars and freshly cut wood – all kinds of products that are needed to build or power our country. On Oct. 16, we had an historic BNSF Office Car Special train with VIP folks on board. I saw about 11 of the most beautiful silver passenger cars from the 1940s and 1950s. BN...
Stress can make us feel sick and even shorten our lives. How we react to things around us affects every part of our body. Think about when you get mad, where do you feel that in your body? Are you the person who gets sick to your stomach? Tightens your neck? What do you do? Our nervous system controls all our organs and glands. It's protected by a strong layer called the dura mater and is nourished by a special fluid called cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). This fluid gives our nerves the nutrients...
This article mainly pertains to the newer Apple Macbooks. I wanted to touch base on this topic as I've had several conversations about it with some of my Mac customers. Here is a scenario: One of my customers called to complain that they were almost out of storage space on their Macbook/Macbook Pro laptops, and were wanting to upgrade their hard drive, possibly a 1 or 2TB drive. After looking up the specs of their Macbook, I unfortunately had to inform them that it is not possible to upgrade...
Tehachapi resident, dentist Dr. Randy Kam, has been invited to walk the Blue Jacket Fashion show on Nov. 13, during L.A. Fashion Week. Despite his nerves about hitting the runway, Kam cracked jokes about how he was going to perform the iconic "Blue Steel" look from the film "Zoolander." Created by fashion designer Frederick Anderson and marketer Laura Miller, the nonprofit event partnered with Zero Prostate Cancer to raise money and bring awareness to the disease. For Kam this show isn't just ab...
