On May 16, at approximately 4:37 p.m., officers responded to a report of structure fire at Coy Burnett Stadium, at the 700 block of E. Tehachapi Blvd. The damaged structure is the snack bar the Tehachapi High School Boosters use for fundraisers and THS local games. Officers immediately evacuated the surrounding area and the Kern County Fire Department arrived to extinguish the flames. There was major damage caused to the interior of the building. On Saturday, April 25 Have a Heart Humane Society and Supervisor Zack Scrivner combined funding to hold a spay/neuter clinic in California City. Dr. Willis, owner of San Joaquin Vet Hospital in Bakersfield, brought his mobile to the Strata Center and performed 37 cat and dog spays and neuters. Have a Heart volunteers tended recuperating pets, checked clients in and gave dozens of vaccinations at the vaccination clinic. During the months that have a fifth Thursday, the Rotary Club of Tehachapi has a social instead of their normal lunchtime meeting. The California Highway Patrol's Mojave and Antelope Valley area offices held a graduation ceremony for new senior volunteers on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. The volunteers have completed a two-week course in which they learned how to assist CHP officers in both administrative and field capacities. Volunteers ages 55 and older take courses in subjects including driving, CPR, first aid, traffic control, cone placement, road closure procedures and radio procedures. Tehachapi herbalist, Edna McCallion addressed the Bakersfield Garden Project Group on the topic “Garden Herb Companions”. A PowerPoint presentation advocated herbs as beneficial plants in vegetable, fruit and flower gardens, as well as vineyards. This information is on Edna’s website at www.herbbasket.net . A May snowstorm dropped a couple of inches of snow on the mountain ridges in Bear Valley Springs on May 7. Starting with clear skies on Thursday morning, by early afternoon snow flurries were falling at the 6,000 foot level. By late afternoon measurable snow had fallen leaving the landscape with a heavy dusting of the white stuff. It continued overnight night, bringing much needed moisture. Postcard scenes and slippery roads greeted residents, but no driving difficulties were encountered....
A neon toilet – pressed into service as a fundraising tool for the Tehachapi Parks Foundation – will soon appear mysteriously on local front yards. Residents will be obliged to make a contribution to have it removed and relocated to another front yard. Happily, the resident can say whose yard the toilet will go to next. Friends of the Tehachapi Airport organizations sub-committee met to discuss the preservation of the historic hanger #1 at the airport. "It's in need of restoration and preservation" stated committee members. They are currently meeting to find the best preservation approach. Future plans might include the hanger being used as an aviation museum showing the history of air travel in Tehachapi....
Pacific Crest Trail Hikers will be disappointed this year as they proceed north from Mexico! In response to the California State Water Resource Control Board’s newly expanded water regulations, the Tehachapi City Council heard the introduction of a new Water Shortage Contingency Plan for Tehachapi at their April 6 meeting. It is up to individual communities to find ways to meet the new goals.
