Surrounded by friends and family, Tehachapi resident Hale Grover celebrated his 100th birthday on Dec. 7 with a huge party at Jake's Steakhouse. On Dec. 10, the Tehachapi Police Foundation hosted 17 local children at their annual Shop with a Cop event. After enjoying pizza from Hungry Howie's at the Tehachapi Police Department, the children rode to Walmart in police vehicles, sirens blaring, for a shopping spree. Four of the nine dedicated Litter Loathers of Bear Valley Springs who showed up on Nov. 15 found a sunny, but cool and very windy day for picking up roadside trash on Bear Valley Road from the gate to Hwy 202. In fact, the conditions were so difficult that the section of Cummings Valley Road from the school to Hwy 202 had to be put off for better weather. On Oct. 20, TownePlace Suites by Marriott of Tehachapi, 1052 Magellan Dr., had its ribbon cutting ceremony. They celebrated three years of construction coming to an end and its grand opening. Following their meeting on Oct. 27, Tehachapi Rotarians delivered a load of candy to Tehachapi Police Chief Kent Kroeger to be used for the upcoming Trunk or Treat event being held on Halloween night. It was fantastic to see local Tehachapi residents and car collectors Hans and Rachel Kahl at the California Hot Rod Reunion. The reunion is typically held in October, and the weather was perfect all weekend. They had their Superbird Plymouth on display and the car was getting lots of attention. The Kahls own a sister Superbird, which is blue and is displayed at shows, as well. Hans and Rachel own many collector cars and are active in the car show circuit in Kern County. Race Communication's Thunder on the Mountain Car show was a big hit with over 200 cars and trucks showing up on Aug. 21. I saw many custom hot rods, trucks and muscle cars. The show was a big fundraiser for the greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce. The proceeds from the event will go to benefit the organization and local businesses in the region and admission was free. Lots of automotive history can be seen when you're out and about walking the streets of Tehachapi. Pictured is a Plymouth Superbird. If you were wondering about all the concrete structures on the side of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near the Tehachapi Depot Museum and the Park & Ride, he UP Railroad is upgrading drainage culverts near Cable siding. That is the area where a BNSF train derailed on January 13, 2022. A workman on the project told me that the BNSF train went into emergency stop due to issues with the air brakes, which caused the derailment. Tehachapi mural artist Lyn Bennett, one of the original artists who painted the Monolith mural located on F Street in Tehachapi, was commissioned to repaint a portion of the mural that was destroyed when an emergency door had to be installed in the side of the new Village Collective located at 122 S. Green St. Bennett said that she had been waiting for a relatively warm day to work on the mural. She will be touching up other areas of the mural that also need repair....
