At their chili cook-off fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 25, the Tehachapi High School Robotics Team 585 (Cyber Penguins) unveiled their 2017 competition robot. This year's competition theme is Steampunk and the robot must perform functions using gears. The THS robot, named Toasty because of its color, maneuvers up to a suspended cord, grabs it and pulls itself up the cord. At their first concert of 2017 the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Newby, hosted sister violin virtuosos Alexis and Heidi Hatch. Their father Peter Hatch, also an accomplished musician, sat in with the string section. Saturday, Feb. 11 marked Tehachapi's 10th Annual Valentine's Wine and Chocolate Tasting sponsored by Main Street Tehachapi. This year there were 24 tasting locations at local businesses beginning with glass and map pick up at the future Stray Leaves tasting room located at the old bank building on the corner of Green and F Streets. At a ribbon cutting on Feb. 9, Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District and the Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce presented the newly refurbished Aspen Builders, Inc. Activity Center, formerly known as the West Park Activity Center. Jim and Lesa Cyr, owners of Aspen Builders, Inc donated $101,00 to the $300,000 project. City dignitaries and many community members joined the Chamber of Commerce for the official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of Dunkin' Donuts in Tehachapi. Matt Higgins of Frontier Group, who is building the donut shops in Kern County, joined Mayor Pro Tem Susan Wiggins in cutting the ribbon at the ceremony on Jan. 18. On Dec. 8 at noon the Rotary Club of Tehachapi held it's 20th Annual Senior Holiday Luncheon. Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District opened the redesigned and improved Meadowbrook Park and Dog Park on Oct. 29, 2016.
