If you ever share a small business idea, everyone will tell you that you need to write a business plan. Creating a plan for a business that's still just an idea in your head can be difficult at best. We talked before about a tool called "The Business Model Canvas Template," and that's a great place to start. If you remember, the canvas is used to get what's in your head down on a piece of paper so that you can create a business model before writing a formal business plan. Once this is done, and...
The Tehachapi City Council had the sad duty of deciding how to deal with the council vacancy created by the death of Mayor Ed Grimes. Essentially they had two choices, to appoint a replacement to fill the position until the November election when a new council member can be elected to fill the remaining two years of Mayor Grimes term. Not appointing someone to fill the vacancy would leave the Council with four members and the possible inability to pass some measures for lack of a majority vote....
At the June 4 City Council meeting the Police Department Community Room was filled to overflowing with people waiting to weigh-in on the subject of SB54, the Sanctuary State bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown last October. Postings on social media had erroneously lead many to believe that members of the City Council supported the measure and they wanted their voice to be heard. Speakers came from as far away as Los Angeles to protest the measure. At the May 21 meeting, a measure to oppose...
At 1:45 p.m., on Monday, May 20, 2018, Tehachapi lost one of its most vocal champions when Mayor Ed Grimes passed away, surrounded by his large and loving family. Despite serving as a member of the Tehachapi City Council since January 2003, Ed often described himself as "the voice of the Warriors". It was evidence of his intense commitment to the Tehachapi community and especially its youth. In addition to working with the football team and the Warrior Boosters, Mayor Grimes utilized the $300...
Each great City department requires a dedicated leader and team willing to follow that direction, which is the case with our very own Tehachapi Police Department. Brought back on line in 2007, the department has continued to evolve with the opening of the station on West C Street and the hiring of Chief Kent Kroeger in 2014, as well as the reorganization of communications and dispatch from a contract to in-house operation in 2016. Most recently the City streamlined our after-hours public works...
After closed session deliberations, following the nearly three and a half hour May 8 School Board meeting, the Tehachapi School Board unanimously chose JMS Principal Paul Kaminski to serve as the Interim Superintendent for the District. The Board listened to presentations from three search organizations that specialize in locating school superintendent candidates, but were unable to make a clear choice at that time, nor could they agree on whether to start the search immediately or wait for a...
Assistant to the City Manager, Corey Costelloe, outlined a new mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling program at the April 16 Tehachapi City Council meeting. The program is the result of the 2016 California Assembly Bill 1826 requiring mandatory organic waste collection from businesses and multifamily properties. Organic waste refers to food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste and food-soiled paper waste that is mixed with food waste. From January 2016 to Ja...
I am often amazed at the quality of work performed by the employees here at the City of Tehachapi. The work required in several departments is performed on a daily basis by educated and talented individuals that keep the City running. One of the more important areas is our water and wastewater operations. For you, the residents, you expect clean water to be in the tap, and wastewater to leave your homes and businesses in the City sewer system. One of the many tasks of a full-service City like...
In 2012 the City of Tehachapi introduced a sponsorship program that allowed businesses, organizations, families or individuals to sponsor an American flag in downtown Tehachapi. The sponsorship program, known as the "Adopt-A-Flag" program, gives Tehachapi and its residents an opportunity to show off their pride and patriotism for America. The City has approximately 100 decorative light posts on Tehachapi Boulevard, Green Street, F Street, Curry, Robinson, and the Mill Street corridor right off...

The Coffee with the Mayor and City Manager will meet at The Coffee Mill on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 a.m. Mayor Ed Grimes says, "the conversations we have each month show the importance of meeting with our residents and business owners in a casual setting. There have been questions regarding business, non profit organizations, and quality of life issues." Recently the Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance, in which Tehachapi is a proud member/investor, held their 2018 Economic Outlook Conference. Adam Fowler, the Director of Research and an economist for Beacon Economics out of Los Angeles, gave the keynote address. As many others have recently, he addressed "fake news" when it comes to the economy. There is no such thing as "Republican" or "Democratic" economic news, it's all one market supported by real data. For example, unlike the...
I'm very proud of the way Tehachapi continues to shine among our peers in Kern County. Recently, Tehachapi was showcased as part of the Kern Economic Summit in Bakersfield, as both our healthy real estate market and business climate were topics of discussion. Our own Roger Hayes, owner of Sierra Technical Services, one of the largest employers in the City and developer of several crucial pieces of combat training drones for the military, was on a panel discussing the aerospace industry in Kern...
Jonathan Hall, served in two capacities at the Kiwanis meeting on March 7. As our President, he conducted the meeting, then stepped into his role as a member of Tehachapi's water board as our featured speaker. His program was about the current thinking on California's water transport issues, the "California WaterFix". More than half of Southern California's water comes from the Sacramento/San Joaquin delta, through the California Aqueduct and the parallel federal Central Valley Project. To the...
It was standing room only at the Police Department Community Room the evening of March 19 when TVRPD Board Chairman Laura Lynne Wyatt and General Manager Michelle Vance presented their concept for the development of a new multi-use community center and for upgrading Recreation and Parks District's existing facilities. They asked the City to support them in their efforts to research and place a bond measure on the November ballot to finance the project. Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park...
Kiwanis members were visited by women from history as portrayed by Storytellers from American Association of University Women. During Women's History Month in March of each year AAUW members visit schools and clubs to highlight contributions women have made throughout history and are continuing to make. Jeannette Crounse was Margaret Brown an American socialite and philanthropist. She told a fascinating account of surviving the sinking of the Titanic. Hollywood made a movie about that and...
Superintendent Susan Andreas-Berval reported that on March 12 TUSD, along with Cerro Coso Community College, unveiled the long-awaited Welding Program at Tehachapi High School. For now, the welding classes are part of the Adult Education Program with Cerro Coso credits; however, it is hoped that...

A dozen members of Tehachapi Kiwanis Club attended the dinner event at Hodel's Restaurant to honor her. I was leaving a meeting recently at the Community Room of the Tehachapi Police Department building on my way back to City Hall. When I leave that venue there are plenty of ways I can take to City Hall. I can continue on C Street until I reach Curry, from there I can turn on D, E, F, or Tehachapi Blvd., since they all connect to Robinson where City Hall is located. For some reason the words "there are many roads to City Hall" just sort of stuck in my mind. As I dwelled on that a little during...
At their Feb. 1 meeting at Steampunk restaurant, the Tehachapi Rotarians were treated to an audio visual presentation by Enrico Palermo, Executive Vice President of The Spaceship Company. The Spaceship Company is part of the Virgin Group and is responsible for the design, manufacture and testing of space vehicles for Virgin Galactic. About 450 people are currently employed by the company. Palermo showed the group the latest pictures of Space Ship Two (SS2) and White Knight Two (WK2), the mother...
In a presentation before the Tehachapi City Council on Feb. 5, Robert Ball from the Kern Council of Governments outlined the Kern Region Active Transportation Plan (ATP). He said that with the passage of SB1 last April, KernCOG can expect an increase in funds to fix roads, highways and bridges. The bill would invest $54 billion statewide over the next decade. Ball estimates that Tehachapi could receive as much as $10 million over the next 24 years from SB1 and cap and trade funds. Ball said...
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. By most measures, 2017 was a pretty good year for investors. But what can you expect in 2018? It's difficult to precisely predict the immediate future of the financial markets. However, many signs point to improved global economic growth and rising corporate earnings – both of which are important drivers of stock prices. In the United States, economic growth may be more modest than in other regions, w...
The City of Tehachapi has released our "2017 Year in Review". This is an annual project we started several years ago to showcase the accomplishments of the City, our various departments and the citizens over the previous calendar year. This year we focused on the theme "We The People" with each section of our City operation being addressed under one of the core principles found in the Preamble of the United States Constitution. We firmly believe that "We The People" of Tehachapi, live up to the...
