  • The Feeling of Being Home

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Dec 20, 2014

Last week, I attended a meeting at the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District, as I often do, and I was approached by someone there who thanked me for the Christmas lights at our Wastewater Treatment Facility. This person told me that he enjoyed seeing the lights on his nightly commute and that they gave him the feeling of being home. Though the lights are temporary, they serve as a bit of a landmark for him, and maybe some others, that indicate they can relax and enjoy this great place...

  • Social Media: Critics/Criticize

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Dec 6, 2014

Last week, I had the opportunity to see a new movie. I sat in the dark, with a drink and a bucket of popcorn, and enjoyed the fruits of labor performed by hundreds of people who either wrote, produced, directed, designed, built, supported, or marketed the movie. After the movie, it occurred to me that I now had an opinion about the final results of their labors and could criticize the set design, the length of the movie, the quality of the dialogue, or any one of the million pieces that go into...

Each year, as elections come and go peacefully, I’m reminded that despite our shortcomings and disagreements, we are still a nation full...

  • Managing Local Resources

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Oct 25, 2014

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming elections in Tehachapi, and the candidates and issues that will be considered by voters as they cast their ballot this November. As an employee of the City and not an elected official, my role is to manage the day to day business of the City and to avoid political discourse when possible. Instead of engaging in political debate best left to those individuals running for office, my staff and I do our best to provide facts and i...

Customers come in to the store seeking help and advice on how to do a home improvement project and usually they take our advice, use the products we recommend, and come back with the good news that it worked. But there have been times when people react in surprising ways. I distinctly remember 5 or 6 years ago a woman came in for paint. She wanted to repaint the kitchen walls. We asked what kind of paint was currently on it-flat or shiny. She said shiny so we told her that she would have to...

This has allowed the Board of Supervisors to make budgetary decisions with the most complete and accurate financial information. In prior months, all County departments were asked to prepare their budget requests for Fiscal Year 2014-15 with...
