Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide
On a day when parades, picnics, and fireworks took center stage for thousands of Tehachapians this year, another event unfolded without as much overt fanfare. At approximately 1:30 p.m. July 4th, 2014, associates from the Home Depot #6835 presented the veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #5948, with an American Flag signed by hundreds of customers and Home Depot associates last Memorial Day Weekend.
The American Flag is three feet by five feet and made of pieces of painted wood which fit together to form a full flag. There was no spot left that hadn't been signed in gold or silver with a small message, or name, expressing thanks for all of our active troops and veterans by the community.
Store manager, Dana Hoffman, told the veterans that the flag was in appreciation and honor of all our veterans who have served our country, and our community.
Accepting the flag on behalf of the VFW was exiting commander Louie Russo who served in the Air Force during Vietnam from 1962 to 1966. New incoming commander, Bill Gallagher, also a Vietnam vet in the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970, stood by his side. Also on hand was Drew Devoursney, Quarter Master, Marine Corps 1975 to 1980 who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Gary Davies, Trustee, who served in the Navy during the Iran Hostage crisis and in the Indian Ocean between 1975 and 1980.
John D. Urias was also ushered up to the front of the presentation. John holds a special place at VFW #5948. He is one of the few remaining veterans of World War II. Mr. Urias served with the anti-aircraft crew, #122, spending a year in the Aleutian Islands and another year in India.
Also representing Home Depot #6835 and helping with the presentation was Judy Payne, Mary Carnahan and Linda Hardman.
The signed, wooden flag will be displayed, and can be viewed at the VFW post #5948 located at 223 W. Tehachapi Blvd. in Tehachapi, California
