Ultimate Summer Refreshers

Bob - the ‘Wine Guy’

With summer in full swing it’s time to take a look at some of the delicious options we have available to us. We can always fall back on Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and there’s a reason why these wines are so popular, but don’t we all enjoy a change now and again. They say variety is the spice of life, and I for one believe that is absolutely true. Especially when so many wines that fly under the radar remain compelling bargains!

I advocate drinking simpler wines to make the better wines we enjoy that much more outstanding, and at the same time I thoroughly support experimentation. As I’ve said before, I know what I like and I know what I don’t like, but the paradigms that form those options evolve over time and I certainly can’t know what I think of things that I have not tried. So keep an open mind this summer and push outside your envelope of comfort once in awhile.

Take note of these five wines for instance, they are perfect wines for summer and worthy of your attention. As I’ve already mentioned, Sauvignon Blanc is a gorgeously refreshing wine, emphasizing freshness, crispness, fruitiness and ease of drinking when the weather turns hot. Chardonnay, for most of us white wine drinkers is the go to wine of choice. Hints of apple with a clean buttery taste and a slightly tart finish. Love the Chard... Italy’s most popular white wine is produced from the Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape varital. A light crisp white wine with flavors that range from melon to pear and even offer a subtle tropical or citrus fruit often a honey or smoky flavor.

German Rieslings are categorized based on their style (levels of dryness) and the grape’s ripeness level at harvest. Riesling wines can be highly aromatic with apple, peach and pear at the forefront mixed with delicate floral undertones and often honey and spice.

A new discovery at the Souza winery is Vinho Verde. Lightly aromatic with a hint of floral spice on the nose followed by citrus fruit aromas and sweet fruity notes. Bright, even tart on the palate with the faintest hint of lemon and line zest flavors. A must try next time you visit.

So there you have it 5 wines you need to discover this summer. For a non-fussy summertime evening, chill a few bottles, prepare a casual dinner; invite friends & family for a delicious treat by the pool or patio. That after all is what wines are meant for and what they do best.

You all remember my Uncle Rocco...well he’s finally decided to come into the computer age. He just got his first computer. Gets it home, hooks it up and can’t figure out how to get it to work. So he calls Tech Support. Uncle Rocco: “It says, hit any key and when I do that nothing happens.” Tech Support: “Can you try again and tell me what happens?” Uncle Rocco: “Tried but nothing.” Tech Support: “What key did you hit?” After a moment and some clicking sounds, Uncle Rocco replies, “Well first I tried my car key and just now my house key.” Bada Bing…
