Summer Sunsets at Triassic Vineyards - July 8 presentation: Fiona Nelson, Zoologist

Wednesday evening July 8 from 7-8:30 p.m., Triassic Vineyards will be featuring Fiona Nelson, a world-famous zoologist and resident of Bear Valley Springs. Her program will present Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAER) Awareness. Fiona has a delightful way of pairing education with vivid story-telling, and we’re excited for this upcoming presentation.

When first discussing the wide range of topics with Fiona on what she could present, she recommended this particular subject for several reasons. She spoke of an accident on the highway that involved a horse trailer while it was in tow. Not only was there a “fender bender” and two upset drivers, but also a large 1500 pound animal in distress!

I realized very quickly that any of us here in Tehachapi could face any number of situations involving horses, cows or other large animals, including wild elk and deer.

Additionally, brushfires pose a particular threat to these animals. Even if they’re not in your stable or backyard, we live in the country up here in Tehachapi and they might be in your neighborhood.

In Fiona’s words, “One frequently used definition of TLAER is `removing an animal from entrapment—natural or mechanical’. This encompasses a wide range of scenarios. It may be as simple as a couple of horses that have escaped from their enclosure and are wandering along by the roadside on the wrong side of a fence or a complex case where a horse has slipped off a trail on a steep hillside and is stuck, unable to scramble back onto the trail. While transporting our horses in trailers, as we are all aware, accidents can happen at any time with serious consequences to our precious cargo.”

Please join us for a stimulating evening of intrigue and adventure! Refreshments will be offered (ice-cold lemonade & tea, and, of course, wine). All this in the cozy atmosphere of Triassic Vineyard’s Tasting Room, Hwy 202 & Cummings Valley Rd.
