Neighborhood Watch, CERT Joint meeting
Stallions Springs Neighborhood Watch and CERT joined together for a joint meeting on Wednesday, January 13, for a program on what to do in an "Active Shooter" situation.
What would be your role in an active shooter incident? How would you be notified? Where would you go? What should you bring? What can you expect?
Police Chief Mike Grant gave a presentation to a standing-room-only crowd. Grant reviewed how the situation was handled during the San Bernardino terrorist attack and the roll of the police and first responders as well as how input from the victims helped during the event. Grant put emphasis on the need for a plan should anyone be caught in this type of situation. You should have a predetermined meeting place, like your car in the parking lot in case you get separated. This is especially true in public places like the mall, sporting events or the theater. Remember the basics. Run, if possible run in the direction the police are coming from, as they have cleared the area behind them. Hide, get down low and get as much material, furniture, etc., as possible between you and the shooter and be quiet. Fight, only if necessary, and try to distract the shooter by throwing something to draw their attention away from you.
CERT began its certification program on January 20 but there is still time to sign up and attend the classes. Contact Sandy Young at 661-412-CERT for more information.
CERT is distributing the "Names and Numbers" phone books as part of a fund raising event but it also allows its members an opportunity to get to know the community better in the event an emergency arises.
