On Earth Day, April 22, Girl Scout Troop 3383 along with their leader Kendra Mauldin and Lehigh Cement CEO Craig Miflin planted a young Raywood Ash tree in Philip Marx Central Park. The tree is the first of at least seven trees that will be replacing dead and dying trees that are scheduled to be removed from the park. According to TVRPD Maintenance Supervisor Nolan Ferdinand, the Raywood was chosen because it is a fast growing tree.
Lehigh donated the tree to the scout troop and all turned out for the planting ceremony on Earth Day. Each scout added a handful of dirt to the tree. Scout leader Mauldin gave a short speech highlighting several facts for everyone to remember. "A mature tree absorbs around 13 pounds of carbon dioxide a year while a younger, actively growing tree may absorb up to 26 pounds of CO² per year – approximately five tons per acre of trees. So the more young trees we can plant, the better," said Mauldin. She added that as part of the Girl Scout Law, they pledge to make the world a better place and what better way than to do it by planting trees and flowers.
