For many Tehachapi youngsters: Rec & Park programs may be 'best hour of their week'

The Forde Files No 120

The Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District programs offer more than games.

"Thousands of kids come through our programs," District Manager LeAnn Williams told the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce at its April 19, 2016 monthly luncheon at Pacino's Restaurant. "They could be abused or bullied or had a fight with their girlfriend. This could be the best hour of their week. We want it to be a safe place for kids and families. We want staff members to be positive role models."

The district serves 30,000 residents over 500 square miles, she said, and while it offers a growing variety of programs for children and adults, it does not duplicate established sports leagues. The TVRPD leaves the soccer competition to AYSO but does hold soccer camps; baseball is the domain of Little League; and while the TVRPD offers no tackle football, flag football is on the schedule.

"The biggest program is youth basketball, with 380 participants," Williams said. "That's a 20 percent increase over last year."

The hoops courts are stretched to the limit. "We need more basketball courts," Williams said.

The TVRPD organizes Movies in the Park, an annual Easter Egg Hunt, Brite Lake Fishing Derby, Battle of the Bands, Super Kids Music Show, a Memorial Day ceremony (partnering with the VFW and American Legion) and one popular event especially for older and former residents of Tehachapi.

"The Old Timers Reunion has doubled in size in the last couple of years," Williams said.

The district has more than 100 volunteers, she said. "We specialize in coach development. It is important that we train them well."
