Vikki Montegna and her family took over the tack business as of Nov. 1. Former owners Jill Nelson, her husband, John, and friend Al Anders, said it has been a fun six years.
"We started selling new and used tack at swap meets and other outdoor venues," Jill said. "People kept asking me where our store was located. So we decided to open one."
The tack shop opened in February 2010 on South Street, but outgrew that location a short time later. It moved to its present spot at 117 S. Mill Street, just off Tehachapi Boulevard.
"It's with some sadness that we're selling," Jill said. "But I know Vikki and her family will do a great job."
Montegna said she is very excited to begin "this new adventure." "I'm so looking forward to this," she said. "I will try and bring the same great service that everyone has come to expect."
There will be a new name in the future. The business will become The Tack Shack.
In addition to her new endeavor with the tack shop, Montegna also operates Vikki's Pet Services. It includes large animal disposal should your horse pass away, and horse transport.
"I'll still be doing that," she said. "I'll have family helping in the store if I'm out on the road."
Jill Nelson said she has no doubt customers will still love coming to the store.
"I know Vikki will fit right in and the transition will be seamless," Jill said. "I also want to thank all our loyal customers, or should I say friends, for shopping with us and swapping horse stories over the years. I hope everyone will give Vikki the same type of support."
Al Anders will continue to do saddle repairs. Customers can contact him through Montegna, or call (661) 750-4421.
