Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide
I was able to complete the NYC marathon (135th overall) on Nov. 6 and I raised $3421 with a majority of that from my Tehachapi dental patients for ZERO. Heartfelt thanks to those generous people who took the time to support ZERO prostate and also allow me to do the largest marathon in the world with over 51,000 finishers.
We started on Staten Island and journeyed through the other four boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan. The race day was gorgeous, sunny, but cool and my wave began at 11 a.m. I finished in over seven hours, taking my time, enjoying the sights. Maybe those two days of walking/sightseeing in NYC took a bit of a toll on my legs. Also, the testosterone lowering meds for the cancer reduces my stamina. I sported a sign on my back telling my tale of Stage IV prostate cancer and exhorting men to get checked. I received tons of "Awesome, Inspiring, God Bless You" on the course. The crowds were amazing and energetic, I missed most of them after mile 20 as it was getting dark and cold. There were still hundreds of us out there and the few volunteers who were left were still exuberant!
The finish line was in Central Park at 76th Street and I had to make my way back down to 57th to my hotel, where my daughter Zoe was waiting with a post race beer. Mahalo to all of my supporters and I hope to raise funds again for NYC and for ZERO next year.
