Tehachapi Symphony Concert to feature violinist Isaac Kim

The Tehachapi Symphony, directed by Dr. David Newby will perform on Sunday, May 7, 2017. The concert begins at 4 p.m. at Country Oaks Baptist Church, located at 20915 Schout Road, Tehachapi, Calif.

This year's Young Artist Competition winner, Isaac Kim, violinist, will perform Sarasate's, Zigeunerweisen. The Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus and director Kathy Kelly will join the symphony for Brahms' Schickalslied (Song of Destiny). Brahms' Symphony No. 3 in F Major will also be performed.

Isaac Kim is a sophomore at Stockdale High School. He started his violin lessons and also performed in public at age 3. Isaac has participated in school orchestras for the last eight years, Strolling Strings for 5 years, Bakersfield Youth Symphony since 2013, Kern County Honor Orchestra since 2011, Southern State Honor Orchestra, CODA Strings Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, All State Honor Orchestra, Kern County Solo and Ensemble Festival, California State Solo and Ensemble Festival, Colburn School Recital, Montecito International Music Festival, Wildwood Music Camp, and Idyllwild Music Festival. He has served as concertmaster and has been given numerous awards, command performances and scholarships. He has also appeared on television network, 3ABN, and Valley Public Radio programs.

Isaac and his younger brother Ian volunteer in local nursing homes bringing music to retirees, which Isaac describes as the highlight of his week and is a very rewarding experience. Isaac currently studies violin with Lorenz Gamma, who works closely with Isaac to bring out his best. His other teachers including Lewis Ament, Elvira Arambula, and Chan Ho Yun, who have nurtured and led him in his music career. Isaac would also like to thank all his school music teachers who have encouraged and motivated him over the years in his music development. Isaac wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. David Newby and each member of the orchestra for the honor of performing with them.

After the intermission, there will be a drawing for the yearly fundraiser, for which tickets may be purchased from any Tehachapi Symphony member, board member, or Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus member. Besides gift cards from local spots, there will also be dinner with Astronaut Commander Richard Searfoss, a handmade quilt, a chance to conduct the orchestra, a glider ride, and a string quartet for an evening included in the raffle. The grand prize is $1,000.

There is a reception following the concert so that community members may meet the Young Artist competition winner, as well as symphony and chorus directors and members.
