Girls from Jacobson Middle School are selected for Tech trek

AAUW of Tehachapi

Tech Trek is a week long summer experience for girls to learn more about math and science while living in dorms on a university campus. They attend interesting workshops and participate in field trips to educational sites. The camps are sponsored by American Association of University Women.

Each year Tehachapi Mountain Branch of AAUW sends three girls from Jacobsen Middle School to one of these camps. The girls chosen to attend this summer are Kennadee Stilson, Alaina Riggs, and Julia Ramos. Two of the girls will attend Whittier College, while the third will attend camp at Fresno State University. The girls were chosen after being part of a group of students recommended by their science teacher. They were then interviewed by a panel of AAUW women who felt these three would benefit most from the experience.

Tehachapi Mountain Branch of AAUW raised $1800, enough money to send two girls to Tech Trek. The third girl was sponsored by Arts/Science/Technology. AST has sponsored a Tech Trek scholarship for the past several years. Laura Lundberg is the leader of AST who praised Joel Beckman, who died recently, for establishing the organization which does so much to promote art, science and technology.

Kennadee, Alaina, and Julia attended a special AAUW meeting where they received certificates entitling them to attend a Tech Trek camp. Certificates were presented by Sonja Wilson, Tech Trek Chair; and Laura Lundberg of AST. They were also given a bag of gifts that will be useful at the camp. The girls introduced their families and thanked AAUW and AST for the opportunity to attend Tech Trek.
