Skin Talk with Donita
More than 60 million Americans suffer from some form of acne breakouts. Acne affects more than 80% of all teenagers at some time in their lives, and clogged pores make up more than 25% of all visits to the dermatologist. Acne has now reached epidemic proportions in adults, especially women.
Let's lay to rest these acne myths!
*. It is not due to dirty skin.
*. It's not caused by eating chocolate.
*. It isn't due to sexual frustration.
*. It isn't restricted to teenagers.
Acne is an actual disorder of the pores. While it can be caused by certain drugs/ medications, or exposure to certain chemicals, acne is an inherited tendency. Dead skin cells are being shed much too quickly in the acne-prone pore. Along with naturally produced sebum and hair, it forms a plug. This is where it all begins. If the body doesn't recognize the plug as an invader, then it remains as a noninflamed lesion (blackhead). If it does (and this is also a familial trait), then it forms into pimples, pustules and cysts. So you can see that as acne is formed below the surface of the skin, it can't be washed away.
Clearing acne takes commitment and an understanding of the process. It involves the daily use of clinical-strength ( this doesn't mean prescription) products that are specifically designed to penetrate the pores, exfoliate dead skin cells, and kill the acne bacteria. However, it takes more than just putting products on the skin; it also requires lifestyle adjustments. It requires knowledge that while there is no known cure, there is a way to control it during its active years.
