Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide
Tehachapi High School is hosting its third annual Tehachapi First Team robotics challenges for all students from first grade through 12th grade. The age-appropriate challenges are divided up into four age groups so students can participate at a level that's right for them, and that they can excel in.
For the 1st through 3rd graders, teams of kids, aided by THS student volunteer mentors, will build a LEGO model and a LEGO WeDo robot, and get to share their work with industry professionals. Participation includes a potential trip to LEGOLand in early 2018.
4th and 5th graders get to work on more advanced projects, also with the help of the high school mentors, with the potential to advance to regional competitions.
7th and 8th graders get to design and build a larger robot, controlled by Android phones they program themselves. Team competition is also rewarded by a championship event in the LA area.
9th through 12th graders get to design and build competitive robots, with the chance to apply STEM skills learned in the program. These teams work to compete at the regional event in Las Vegas in April 2018.
This is fun, educational and challenging for all student participants. Students get to work in teams, learn new skills, use those skills to compete against other students and advance to higher levels.
The first year this program was hosted at THS there were a total of 15 students participating. The second year, participation grew to more than 140 kids. This year might grow even larger.
And the high-school-age mentors love the program, too. Lyndsey Schultz, a Junior First Lego League mentor, loves working with the children, and loves helping her community.
Participation is free, and registration is still available, through Sept. 18. For more information, go to http://www.firstteam585.org, or email the program coordinator, Danielle Evansic, at [email protected].
