Math Science Camp was fun for girls

AAUW of Tehachapi

Each year American Association of University Women sponsors Tech Trek, a week long summer experience for girls to learn more about math and science while living in dorms on a university campus. They attend interesting workshops and participate in field trips to educational sites. The girls are chosen from Jacobsen Middle School at the end of their 7th grade. The three girls who attended Tech Trek this past summer thanked AAUW Tehachapi Mountain Branch for the wonderful experience they had.

Kennadee Stilson attended camp at Whittier College where she learned about rockets and how to make them. She developed a real interest in them and thinks she might like to study rocket science.

Julia Ramos studied hot air balloons at Fresno State. She said it was an amazing experience to see her balloon creation flying in the air. She said it taught her a lot about physics.

Alaina Riggs was at Whittier College and spent time studying in a cadaver lab. They wore lab coats and gloves and touched the cadavers. She is now interested in working in a field which concerns deceased bodies.

The girls described the Tech Trek experience as "wonderful, awesome, and great fun." They thanked AAUW for providing them the opportunity to attend Tech Trek.

Tehachapi Mountain AAUW hopes to send at least three more girls to camp next summer. It costs $900 for the week long experience so the branch will be seeking ways to raise that amount for next year.

AAUW promotes equity for women and girls and positive societal change. For membership information call (858) 444-0496 or (571) 247-2143.
