Cooper Brown, 3 1/2 years old, won the children's category at the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District Fishing Derby at Brite Lake on April 20 with a 2-pound, 13-ounce rainbow trout. It was Cooper's first fish. Shown with the beaming champ is his dad, Jeremiah Brown. They are from Long Beach. Cooper's granddad, Jack Brown, lives in Tehachapi. Jeff Starn of Tehachapi caught the winning fish in the adult category. Starn's fish was the same weight as Cooper's, at 2-pounds, 13-ounces.

Young angler Maddie Whitaker, and her dad quickly caught their limit of trout in about 90 minutes after first baiting up. Power Bait seemed to do the trick for them.

No shortage of trout in Brite Lake. Recently stocked with over 800 pounds of trout the derby anglers had no problem in catching their daily five trout limit.

Camping spaces were in abundance and many of the Easter weekend anglers took advantage of camping over both Friday and Saturday night at Brite Lake.
