Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide
Kicking things off will be the summer book sale on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This sale is actually a two-in-one book sale. First you'll have a large selection of antique, rare and unique books, including sets of history, art and literature books and so much more all with reasonable prices. Prices on these books range from a few dollars to around $100 (for some rather unique ones). Some of these are Natural History or Experimental Philosophy by Tiberius Cavallo from 1832. There are some unique copies of books by F. Scott Fitzgerald that have gilt pages and are leather bound. Then there is also a rare copy of "Circle of Bliss," which is filled photos of Buddhist Meditative Art. There will also be some "books into art," created by our artistic volunteers from books not in good enough condition to sell.
The second part of the book sale is the always popular "filling a bag for $3" sale. This time there will be lots of children's books and DVDs. There will also be lots of young adult, science fiction and fantasy. There is a large collection of books about golf, and as always, there will be all the fiction and nonfiction books. The book sale is downstairs in the children's area and meeting room.
In addition, Tehachapi's Cheers to Charity has selected Friends of the Library as one of the charities they will donate to this year. This popular event will have wine, beer and food and will be at Tehachapi's Aviator Park on Aug. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. General Admission tickets for the Cheers to Charity Event will be available for sale at the Library for $70 which is $10 off the "at the gate price." The Friends of the Library will start selling our share of the tickets on June 1 and will also be available at the book sale.
And what does all this get used for? Supporting the library's programs, in particular, the annual Summer Reading Challenge. This gives everyone the opportunity to read books for prizes. Everyone that finishes the challenge will get a book and tickets for opportunities to win additional prizes. Prizes for all ages are available, such as gift certificates, books, massages, glider rides and so much more. To participate, come into the library and pick up a reading log. There are different requirements to "finish" the challenge based on age level (children, teens and adults).
In addition, the first 200 people that finish the challenge will get a ticket for themselves and a guest to a special family-friendly movie at the Hitching Post Theaters on Aug. 3. Additional prizes will be given out at the theater. Once the movie is over, go back across the street to the Library Courtyard where there will be a party to celebrate everyone that finished the challenge.
Since you're going to be coming in to read anyway, why not check out the Children's Lunch Program. The program starts Wednesday, June 12 from noon to 12:30 p.m. (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) in the courtyard. This is free for children 2 to 18, and anyone over 18 can receive a meal for $4. Then enjoy arts and crafts, and other library programs afterward. Some of the other summer programs will include the popular Roaming Reptiles, Christopher Lopez the Magician and Omnipresent Puppets. And don't forget to check out more books.
The library's Spectacular Super Summer Kick-Off Event will be a mini Comic Con on Saturday, June 15. There will be local comic artists and a costume contest. There are many comics to be given away and a special celebrity message just for our Tehachapi Library.
So as you can see, this summer the Tehachapi Library, 212 South Green St., is going to be a very busy place in the community. So come and check out all that's happening. We're going to have a great summer!
