Tehachapi City Council Update
A General Municipal Election was scheduled to be held at the same time as the Statewide and National General Election on Nov. 3, 2020. City offices scheduled for the November election were City Council District 2, City Council District 3, City Clerk and City Treasurer.
The original filing period for candidates closed on Aug. 6, 2020 and was ultimately extended until Aug. 12, 2020. At that time there was only one candidate nominated for each office. The current City Treasurer Susan Showler said she did not reapply as she is moving outside of the City and is not eligible to run. According to Elections Code 10229 and 10225, if on the 83rd day before an election only one person has been nominated for any office, the elections official must inform the governing body of the city (City Council) who then must decide whether to appoint these candidates to their positions on Nov. 3 or spend the $10,000 to $25,000 required to prepare and mail ballots and then have the County certify the results.
Faced with these two options at the Aug. 20 City Council meeting, the Council members discussed the options and, in the end, chose to save the expense and appoint the candidates to their offices in November.
The unopposed City offices are:
City Council District 2 – Christina Scrivner
City Council District 3 – Michael Davies
City Clerk – Tori Marsh
City Treasurer – Stacy Curry
Per the State of California Executive Order N-29-20, this meeting was held telephonically. City Council meetings may be observed (or heard) online at http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh0HOSFazMT27ynDXhkUQ0A.
