Visitor Services Park Aides (seasonal)

Great Basin District is seeking to hire multiple Visitor Services Park Aides for the 2022 spring Antelope Valley poppy season. The reporting location is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve at 15101 Lancaster Road, Lancaster, California 93536 (16 miles east of Hwy 14).

This position is seasonal, and works under the direction of the Supervising State Park Ranger. The visitor services park aide duties include operating the entrance station at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, collection of park fees, and completing end-of-day cash register accounting and associated collections paperwork. This position is a primary point of contact for park visitors and will be responsible for providing information about the park(s), explaining and advising visitors of park rules, and giving directions to park facilities.

The Visitor Services Park Aide will report park issues and problems to lead staff. Required skills are basic reading, writing and math skills. This is a uniformed position; the successful candidate will be required to purchase and wear a State Park uniform.

Reliable transportation is essential due to the remote work location. The successful candidate will be required to have a valid class C driver’s license and pass a live scan background check.

Maintenance Park Aides (seasonal)

Great Basin District is seeking to hire multiple Maintenance Park Aides for the 2022 spring Antelope Valley poppy season. The reporting location is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve at 15101 Lancaster Road, Lancaster, California 93536 (16 miles east of Hwy 14).

This position is seasonal, and works under the direction of the District Maintenance Supervisor. The Maintenance Park Aide performs routine housekeeping and maintenance of facilities and grounds at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Saddleback Butte State Park, Red Rock Canyon State Park, and the Antelope Valley Indian Museum. Duties include litter and garbage collection and disposal; cleaning and maintaining picnic areas, restrooms, offices, and visitor centers; assisting with basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, vandalism repairs, road and trail maintenance; and fence repairs.

This is a uniformed position; the successful candidate will be required to purchase and wear a State Park uniform. Pay scale is $15.76-$18.42.

Poppy Reserve Volunteer Training for 2022 Wildflower Season

Do you enjoy learning about natural and cultural history, and meeting people from around the world? Then join us for the 2022 Poppy Reserve volunteer training!

The two-day volunteer training will be held on Saturdays, February 19 and 26, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (both days must be attended). Duties include staffing the visitor center and gift shop, walking the trails, and/or leading tours. Volunteers working inside the visitor center must provide proof of vaccination (masks are required indoors for all staff, volunteers and visitors).

Volunteers may range in age from student to senior citizen, and no experience or prior knowledge is required. Volunteers must be interested in learning, and have a positive, friendly attitude. New volunteers must attend both training days and pass a background check. The active season is from March 1 through May 8 (Mother’s Day), and a minimum average of eight hours per month is required (scheduling is flexible).
