Community Alert – CCI Prescribed Burn, July 14

On Friday, July 14, Kern County firefighters will conduct another Public Safety Prescribed Burn. Friday's operation is known as the "CCI Burn" (California Correctional Institution Burn).

Friday's burn is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday. The burn location is CCI Tehachapi, 24900 Hwy 202 Tehachapi.

The prescribed burn will also support fire research and development of fire modeling software as well as smoke monitoring. The CCI Burn is also an excellent training opportunity for the CCI Tehachapi Fire Station along with KCFD apprentice Fire Heavy Equipment Operators and Hand Crews. Fire resources will divide the land on CCI Tehachapi property into burn parcels. These parcels will be modeled using the latest prescribed fire software to predict fire behavior and effects. Smoke sensors will be placed in the area to monitor particulate release from the fire to support research on burning in the area of homes and communities. Fire Hand Crews and Engine Crews will practice firing and holding techniques while UCSD, Redline Safety, and EKAPCD staff monitor the fire and smoke.

The opportunity to conduct research and training during this prescribed burn is essential as Kern County moves forward with the rest of California to support the increased use of prescribed fires to combat growing wildland fire threats.
