James Phillips Carmichael February 16, 1942 – February 18, 2024

Celebration of Life

James (Jim) P. Carmichael passed away at home on Sunday, Feb. 18, following a short battle with cancer. Jim was born Feb. 16, 1942, in Los Angeles. He grew up in Inglewood, California and joined the Navy in 1960. Jim and Linda met on a blind date in 1962 and were married in 1966.

Jim was a mentor to many young people as an Assistant Scout Master, Little League Coach and Commander of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps Haven Division. He also worked as a machinist in the aircraft industry for over 30 years.

In 2002, Jim and Linda moved to Bear Valley Springs where he spent several years as a Ranger. He was a docent at the Tehachapi Depot Museum, member of VIPS for the Tehachapi Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff's Department, was a member of the Kern County Pipes and Drums and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Jim was Past Commander of Tehachapi American Legion Post 221 and active in the Bear Valley Springs veterans Association.

Jim enjoyed photography, playing bagpipes, and all things Scottish. He was most proud of playing the pipes at the Bakersfield National Cemetery to honor his veteran brothers.

Those left to mourn Jim are his wife Linda; his children David, Debra and Daniel and his grandchildren Jessica, Anthony and Riley.

A memorial service will be held at Tehachapi Community Church 100 E. E St., March 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m., with an escorted procession to the Bakersfield National Cemetery following the service. A reception will be held at the American Legion Hall, 125 E. F St., Tehachapi beginning at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Tehachapi Depot Museum.
