Celebration of Life
Claire Louise Hammons of Tehachapi, passed away peacefully on April 23. Claire was born on Nov. 25, 1944 to Dr. Gerald and Jane Hodgson, in San Francisco, California. Claire graduated from Palos Verdes High School in 1962 and later, while living and working in Tehachapi, she received her AA degree in Bakersfield.
Claire worked for 24 years at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, in Accounting, and then later as a manager in Industries. In retirement, Claire volunteered with Tehachapi animal rescue groups, and was active in a variety of community organizations, such as the Democratic Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER, the Community Congregational Church and the Oak Tree Bridge Club. An avid reader and card-player, if Claire didn't have a book in her hands, she had cards. She was ready to play any card game any time. Claire often won Bridge tournaments with her long-term bridge partner, Maggie Keeler, both locally and throughout California, even online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Claire is lovingly remembered by her family, and by her many friends. Claire was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sisters Alice (Larry) Cauble and Carol (Clair) Hodgson Birkman, her daughters Laura (Corey) Colvin and Cari (Larry) Hammons, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life was held for Claire at Wood Family Funeral Service Pavilion in Tehachapi, on Monday, May 20. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society Claire L. Hammons Memorial Fund at raiseyourway.donordrive.com/campaign/Claire-L-Hammons–Memorial-2024 or one of the Tehachapi animal rescue organizations; Claire strongly supported both types of organizations.
