On Monday, May 27, a large crowd gathered to pay respect to those who died in service to the nation. The speaker of the day was Navy veteran Greg Hahn, who spoke in honor of several dogs who bravely defended our troops, and were given awards of honor.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Rice, a twice honored Purple Heart veteran.
Four honorees were added to the Columns of Honor on that day: James W. Saunders, a U.S Navy veteran who served in Vietnam; Richard B. Padgett, an army veteran who served in Korea; Richard B. Streid, a U.S Navy veteran; and Eldon (Don) E. Kordes, who served in the Navy during WWII.
Two Gold Star families are honored annually. These are the families of Adam Zanutto (Rick and Donna Zanutto), and Sgt. Earl Victor Sigmund.
Taps was played by Jim Rice. Bagpiper Travis Combs ended the service with “Amazing Grace.”
After the service, attendants were invited to view five Portraits of a Warrior from East Kern who were killed in action. These portraits will be displayed at the Portrait of a Warrior Gallery in Bakersfield.
