Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide
Members of the Tehachapi Community Church recently recognized Ellen Hays, a long-time resident of Tehachapi, who celebrated her 90th birthday on July 1. There were flowers, balloons, cookies and ice cream, and the congregation sang "Happy Birthday" to her during church service.
Ellen was born in Oklahoma, but moved to the West Coast when she was young. She was musically inclined from an early age, becoming proficient at both the piano and violin. Ellen played the violin at Burbank High School, played piano for her church and also sang in the choir. She eventually learned how to play the organ, as well.
For most of the last 40 plus years, Ellen has called Tehachapi home. She was employed by Bank of America for many years, working at branches in Lamont, Arvin and Bakersfield. Along with being a busy, talented and independent woman, Ellen raised two sons, Gene and Darrell.
Ellen joined the Tehachapi Community Church in the mid '90s, where she sang in the choir and played both the piano and organ for many years. She also played violin in the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra, and sang with the Summit Singers.
Up until a few years ago, Ellen owned a local business cleaning service (Ace Window Masters), which she started with friends in 1991. She continued to stay active in her "golden years." In addition to her musical activities, Ellen has served on nearly every committee at church, including Board of Trustees. Even though she no longer plays the piano or organ on Sunday mornings, she enjoys attending church and looks forward to seeing her friends.
