"Germany has become a country that many people abroad associate with hope." – Angela Merkel
I recently visited Frankfurt, Germany. I intended to learn all about the history of beauty in Germany, however, what I learned was everything I didn't expect. What exactly does a major financial hub, home of the European Central Bank, have to do with beauty? I'll be going over exactly that and how Germany changed my perspective on the beauty industry.
Since I don't speak or understand Deutsch, I spent 10 days immersed in a culture that forced me to rely on my vision to comprehend my surroundings. I used the same eyes I use to study your proportions, hair density, hair health and color balance of your overall appearance when you sit in my chair, ready to be transformed. This time, I wasn't looking for ways to enhance, instead I had to understand the beauty of being rebuilt after a World War.
I didn't realize that my perception of beauty was limited to just the appearance of people because I became obsessed with what services I can offer to maximize my client's potential. I was able to bond with people I just met, only by hairdressing.
It was awesome because the language of hairdressing and beauty is something I can relate to the world. Hairdressing is a worldwide language. I don't speak German but I can connect with anyone just like I did with Carmina (pictured). She wanted a new look and I gave it to her with my skills, in a backyard in Kelsterbach!
Angela Merkel was the first woman to serve as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021, a fact I celebrate because most of my clientele is predominantly women. Her quote strikes me because I left Germany with a renewed hope for beauty. When I saw how Romerberg was restored to its unique and vibrant appearance, it was hard to believe that it's been around since the 9th century! I guess you could compare this to the shock I experience when someone with a full head of gray hair restores their youthful appearance by coloring it. If I were able, I would like to give Angela Merkel a shoulder length bob because it would make her look younger and more proportionate.
War brings ugly to the forefront, but experiencing the beauty that emerges when you rebuild from the ground up was inspiring. It is a message we can hold onto in our personal lives, as well. Leaving a career I had dedicated 10 years of my life to so I could start my own business was frightening. But now, owning Chiseling Image Luxury Aesthetics, I find myself renewed and reinvented.
During my trip, I was able to visit the Omniturm Tower. "Omniturm" derives from the Latin "Omnis" meaning everyone. This helped me see that the potential of reaching beauty is for everyone. I could already find beauty in everyone, but it wasn't as apparent until I stood in front of Omniturm. Just how the Omniturm was built to cater to a multitude of needs, so is Chiseling Image Luxury Aesthetics a place that caters to everyone however it can.
Germany was more than a trip, it was a beautiful transformation within myself that renewed my hope, and that's beautiful.
