A walk through downtown Tehachapi always includes friendly faces, but doesn't usually reveal sidewalks filled with dragons, superheroes and flowers. Chalk on the Walk 2024 arrives Aug. 10.

Originally founded by former Tehachapi Valley Arts Association (TVAA) President Peggy Cowden in 2000, Chalk on the Walk is a community-wide event that welcomes creative people of all skill levels and ages. One of the great things about this event is that the medium is accessible and down-to-earth. Do you remember the last time your grabbed a few colorful sticks of chalk to draw on a sidewalk or driveway?

Chalk on the Walk has several categories for people to sign up for, from beginner all the way to professional. Groups, families or individuals are welcome to enter, as well. Each entrant will receive a 4' x 4' area and a set of chalk to create their masterpiece.

Although the TVAA offers prizes for the top chalk drawings in their registered group, the main purpose of the event is more than just a drawing contest. Chalk on the Walk is a fundraiser that directly benefits local classrooms. The TVAA wants to "Keep Art in the Classrooms," so all the profits from this event go toward their Art Supply Donation program. The Art Supply Donation program accepts art supply wish lists from teachers in Tehachapi, purchases art supplies from their lists and donates the needed supplies.

This year's event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 starting at 7:30 a.m., so you'll have plenty of time to work on your drawing. And make sure you stick around for the awards ceremony at 3 p.m., which will feature some amazing prizes! The TVAA is also seeking sponsors for the event. Sponsors will receive a free space to draw, chalk and have their business's logo placed on event banners and social media posts – all for just $100.

If you're interested in engaging with the local arts community while doing some good during Chalk on the Walk, you can download the registration form on the Gallery 'N' Gifts website at http://www.galleryngifts.com, and mail it back or drop it off in person at Gallery 'N' Gifts, 100 W. Tehachapi Blvd., Tehachapi.
