At the Democratic Club picnic, supporters rally around Kamala Harris.

An enthusiastic crowd of nearly 100 Democrats attended the Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club's annual picnic in Philip Marx Central Park. There were lots of signs, posters, shirts and hats supporting Kamala Harris for President.

Club President Yvette Benton greeted the crowd and introduced American folk singer James Lee Stanley who sang the national anthem. Everyone paused from serving themselves at the food table and stood quietly with hands on heart as the song rang out across the park.

A half dozen speakers gave inspiring messages urging all to become involved and encouraged everyone's full participation to ensure democracy in America. Lynn Eckert, American Legion Post 221 commander, spoke of her concern about veterans and how to meet their needs. Imelda Ceja Butkiewicz, Central Labor Council President and Women's Caucus VP, stressed the importance of getting out the vote. She urged everyone to do something and get involved.

Bernita Jenkins introduced herself as a candidate for District 2 supervisor. She is the only woman running along with five men. A former educator who worked for Kern High School District for 20 years, Jenkins declared it is time for a woman to become supervisor. The applause and cheers from all present showed they agreed.

Dr. Julie Bowling, a cultural anthropologist, urged Democrats to always be respectful of others. It is important to listen and learn. One should be open and willing to discuss issues in a meaningful manner.

Kyle Buda is the campaign manager for Rudy Salas who was unable to be present. He described Salas as the best kind of politician, one who actually helps the people. Salas is not in Tehachapi's Congressional District, but he is running to help all families.

Martin Hernandez, president of Bear Valley Springs Community Service District, was the final speaker. He declared we can have a better future. Everyone must get out and vote. He noted that in most elections only about 34% of those eligible cast a vote. He declared, "Don't complain! Do something!"

Each speaker inspired the crowd to the point that chants of "Kamala, Kamala," and "We won't go back" were heard around the block. Suddenly, all those in the park looked up and an airplane was writing a smiley face in the sky. Democrats took that as a sign of encouragement.
