Tehachapi Murals to unveil restored iconic mural, Sept. 9

Large sections of the 1915 Street Dance mural were falling off of the mural after a harsh winter, spurring the creation of Tehachapi Murals, an organization focused on repairing local murals.

Local nonprofit organization, Tehachapi Murals, invites the community to attend the ribbon cutting for the newly repaired and restored "1915 Street Dance" mural on Monday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. The mural is located on Tehachapi Boulevard between Robinson and Green Street.

Following the harsh weather conditions last winter, the wall incurred serious water damage where the mural is located. Large portions of the mural were falling off in pieces, posing not only a safety concern but a cause for action to save this historic art piece.

Tehachapi Murals was created to protect and restore the murals in Historic Downtown Tehachapi. According to the organization's website, "This is a process that requires careful attention to detail and a deep respect for the artwork's original intent. The restoration process involves a delicate balance of cleaning, repairing and repainting to bring the mural back to its former glory."

Led by Tina Dilly, mural advisor; Charles White, historian; Jeanette Pauer, chairman; and Lyn Bennet, mural restorationist, this organization is working quickly to repair Tehachapi's murals and maintain their cultural and historical significance to our community.

"The People of the Mountains: The Nuwä Tribe" mural, located on the side of the Tehachapi Hitching Post Theater, is next on the organization's list for restoration. The mural depicts Tehachapi's Nuwä or Kawaiisu tribe, the first inhabitants of this area.

"This is a huge part of our community, and we take great pride in it. It's beautiful – the colors, the detail – it's irreplaceable," said Tehachapi Murals Chairman Jeanette Pauer.
