Tehachapi resident, dentist Dr. Randy Kam, has been invited to walk the Blue Jacket Fashion show on Nov. 13, during L.A. Fashion Week. Despite his nerves about hitting the runway, Kam cracked jokes about how he was going to perform the iconic "Blue Steel" look from the film "Zoolander."

Created by fashion designer Frederick Anderson and marketer Laura Miller, the nonprofit event partnered with Zero Prostate Cancer to raise money and bring awareness to the disease.

For Kam this show isn't just about looking good; it's deeply personal. His battle with cancer began on Oct. 13, 2014. Before his diagnosis and treatment, he believed that he lived a relatively healthy lifestyle. He was an avid runner and participated in numerous marathons.

According to the American Cancer Society, there were almost 300,000 cases of the disease reported in 2024. In the U.S. alone, there were 32,250 deaths resulting from prostate cancer.

Kam took the Prostate Specific Antigen, or PSA test. The PSA is a protein enzyme produced in the prostate gland that is released into the bloodstream. Abnormal amounts of PSA can indicate signs of prostate cancer. Following his diagnosis, Kam made it his life's goal and purpose to advocate for men's health and PC survivors and victims.

"There is no such thing as being cancer free," said Kam. "There is always a chance it could come back, but there are things you can do to prevent that from happening."

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1957, Kam attended Loyola Marymount University, then USC school of dentistry. He has lived in Tehachapi for 25 years, and currently owns his practice, Randall Kam DDS.

His educational background helped him do the research that he stated was vital for his journey and should be a high priority. He recommended sites such as Cancer.org, Prostate Cancer Foundation, and HealthUnlocked. There, he was able to connect with other cancer patients, share recovery tips and their battles with the disease.

"If you're not fit, start exercising if you can, and take the proper medication," Kam said.

By weight lifting, exercising and getting outdoors, he was not only able to aid his physical health, but also his mental health. "Mindfulness and meditation" was also a suggestion.

"Most men don't have a physical outlet, so find one," he said.

Through various rounds of chemo-therapy and support from the people around him, he was able to recover from prostate cancer and live a healthier lifestyle. Because of his work and contributions to the community, Kam was able to reach other men and help them with the challenges that come from having cancer.

"When you get diagnosed, take a breath, do the research, be as proactive as you possibly can. Have other outlets, take care of yourself to keep your mind off the cancer," said Kam. "And, don't be afraid to ask for help."
