Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide

Meet Your New Neighbors

Maria and Daryl Hale moved to Tehachapi in September from the Saugus area of the Santa Clarita Valley where they had lived for 23 years.

They had been hunting for a quieter, simpler life now that they were both retired. Maria said that they had considered Kernville but it was a bit too small and remote. Daryl finally found Tehachapi while searching online. It had everything they wanted: the natural setting, four seasons and small town feel without being isolated. Perfect.

Maria was raised in South Pasadena as part of a large family of three sisters and three brothers. Daryl was raised in the San Fernando Valley with one brother and one sister. He and Maria met in a restaurant bar. Daryl was appearing at the local courthouse as a witness for a moving company. Maria just happened to be there. They were married and have now been married for 35 years and have three grown children.

Maria retired in 2020 after spending 36 years as an elementary school teacher. Daryl, a FedEx driver working out of Oxnard, finally retired in 2023. Maria said that after she retired she spent most of her time at the gym or at the local Senior Center. Daryl is a car enthusiast. He had two Cobras that were exhibited at Thunder on the Mountain this year. You may have seen them, one was white and the other purple. Maria added that Daryl at one time had a hot rod but sent it off to a relative living in Texas.

Both Daryl and Maria are thrilled to be part of the Tehachapi community and look forward to spending many years in our town. A big Tehachapi welcome to the Hales.
