Tehachapi's Online Community News & Entertainment Guide

The Salvation Army serves the community

The Salvation Army brought hope and joy to many families in Tehachapi during the past year. They were especially busy during the winter holidays when they provided meals, warm clothing, Christmas gifts and a safe place for young people to gather.

Tehachapi Mountain Democrats appreciate the work of The Salvation Army and have helped with several of their efforts with donations of food and other items. They have also helped with the distribution of gifts. Recently they met with Marget Willer to learn more about the work of The Salvation Army in Tehachapi.

Willer has been with SA for 25 years and is the Director of Service Extension. She oversees 30 service units in California which help provide food and warm coats for struggling families in communities like Tehachapi. Their Giving Tree Program helps families at Christmas time by providing gifts for under the tree.

Willer is a long-time resident of Tehachapi, although she grew up in Lancaster. She explained that during childhood her family struggled financially and needed help to live securely. It was this experience that inspired her work with The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army was established in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist preacher. It is active in 130 countries and is dedicated to helping those in need, regardless of their beliefs or background.

"The Heart of Salvation Army is service without discrimination," Willer said. She praised the grocery stores in Tehachapi that donate food and the volunteers who help with its distribution.
